Sr. Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

Role Summary You think of electronics packaging as a puzzle, fitting space, thermal, rigidity, and cost constraints; innately understanding the engineering tradeoffs that were made to achieve the desired goals. You understand manufacturability, draft angles, and flow rates. You are a critical thinker, an expeditor, and a problem solver. You love working with your hands and tools to get to the root of a problem and resolve it. This position will be based in Tustin, CA, and will report to the Sr, Manager, Mechanical Design. Responsibilities Vehicle Level Integration – You will work with vehicle line and cross-functional stakeholders to define system requirements for vehicle ECU platform. You will work with vehicle integration to determine packaging envelopes, and ensure your designs are integrated and properly mounted in the vehicle. You will be responsible for the mechanical performance of the module in the vehicle. Electronics Packaging Design and Release – You will work on all aspects of electronics packaging design for internally designed components at Rivian. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to define packaging space requirements within the vehicle. You will design enclosures and mechanical assemblies for Infotainment, Connected Car, and body control systems that meet strict thermal, environmental, and EMC requirements. You will be responsible for ensuring designs meet automotive requirements, including drawing GD&T, materials selection, thermal management, vibration, shock tolerance, module takt time, manufacturability, and mechanical acceptance. You will be responsible for releasing components into PLM Production Management – You will work with suppliers to make sure your designs are optimized for high volume manufacturing, while meeting all performance targets. You will be reviewing manufacturing drawings and assembly drawings to ensure proper end item builds. Mechanical Validation - You will help select mechanical shock and vibration levels for your product accordingly. You will perform or coordinate CAE analysis for thermal and vibration durability simulations. You will be aiding in the mechanical validation of your product, including fixture design and failure analysis in order to ensure the product meets environmental durability and reliability standards. Qualifications Minimum Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering Experience in die-casting, sheet metal stamping, and injection molded plastics for electronic packaging designs Extensive experience using CAD tools, Catia V5 or V6 preferred. Experience creating, conducting, and interpreting thermal and mechanical simulations, Ansys experience preffered Design for thermal, vibration, and EMC Experience conducting closed loop tolerance analysis for complex assemblies Familiar with GD&T requirements Expert in high volume Production Expert in tooling design and review Experience in designing for CTE, mechanical shock and vibration. Pay Disclosure Salary Range for Southern California Based Applicants: $176,200 - $220,300 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law). Salary Range for Northern California Based Applicants: $191,600 - $239,500 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
