California American Water has a new opportunity for a Sr. Water Quality & Environmental Compliance Specialist. This statewide support role will be responsible for reviewing and analyzing lab reports. You will partner closely with the Water Quality and Production teams across the business to verify data and ensure we are meeting regulatory compliance within the industry. 

 

*Note: This role can report from any of the California American Water operation centers in the state. 

 

Position Details

Base salary range: $65,208 to $108,966/annually

 

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. Primary Role

Responsible for organizing advanced functions and activities related to water quality and environmental compliance for assigned facilities throughout California. Performs dual validation and QA/QC for all water and wastewater samples. Ensures reporting consistency through the review lab results against internal reports. Verifies that division developed sampling schedules for water and wastewater are scheduled appropriately. Confirms that sampling results are reflected appropriately on external agency reporting databases and takes appropriate action to correct any discrepancies. Proactively communicates with relevant staff to ensure samples are collected on schedule and reports any discrepancies in sampling results and schedules. Supports the onboarding of new acquisitions and aids in the development and review of sampling schedules. Requires strong attention to detail, troubleshooting data discrepancies, and effective communication. May also assist with other environmental programs (drinking water, hazardous materials/waste, air resources, wastewater discharge) as needed to ensure regulatory compliance.

Key Accountabilities Perform dual validation, QA/QC, and analytical analysis for lab reports, and sampling schedule verification activities as they pertain to water quality, wastewater, and environmental compliance sampling across all California divisions. Proactively communicate with staff to ensure sample schedule accuracy, adherence, sample, and report result discrepancies for water and wastewater samples. Confirm accurate reflection of sampling in external agency databases, correct discrepancies. Troubleshoot data discrepancies across multiple platforms and databases. Support acquisition onboarding and development of sampling schedules. Manage monitoring and reporting programs to ensure compliance with federal and state water quality and environmental regulations and company standards for assigned facilities. Obtain, prepare, file, and maintain all regulatory reports and records. Identify potential issues and problems and initiate responsive actions and mitigate environmental violations. Supervise, monitor, and calibrate analyzers/equipment, etc. to ensure established standards of performance and accuracy are maintained. Conduct advanced projects and prepare reports as needed. Investigate and respond to escalated water quality complaints or concerns. Knowledge/Skills Knowledge of chemistry, laboratory techniques, and QA/QC programs. Regulatory knowledge of proper lab analytical testing methods. Thorough processing skills and good working knowledge of computer programs, databases, and software to support specific assignments. Knowledge of federal and state drinking water, wastewater, and environmental standards and regulations, and an understanding of current environmental legislation and regulations. Process, project, and program management skills; quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving); effective people management (e.g., planning, organizing, controlling, and leading teams); written and verbal communications (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations); interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting). Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or engineering, biology, or related field. Five (5) years’ experience in water, wastewater, and laboratory operations. Experience in administering hazardous waste, hazardous materials, air resources, or water waste discharge programs is desirable.
