SRO Engineer, Nuclear Operations - Reactor Operator

Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse’s mission to provide clean energy solutions? At Westinghouse, we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and we seek to identify, attract and recruit the most qualified talent while recognizing and encouraging the value of diversity in the global workplace.

SRO Engineer, Nuclear Operations - Reactor Operator

Overview

The Nuclear Operations (NucOps) team at Westinghouse is looking for the best of the next generation of Nuclear Professionals. NucOps is an industry leader for nuclear power plants worldwide with products and services supporting Control Room Operators and Reactor Engineers. Once you join us, you will be working simultaneously on the new generation of reactors like the AP300 SMR and eVinci microreactor, the new fleet of AP1000® and the operating fleet from all over the world. Building your skills based on actual operating plant experience combined with advanced plant design (AP1000s, SMRs and microreactors) will be a major differentiator and accelerator for your career in the nuclear industry.

NucOps has supported the commissioning of PWRs since the beginning of the commercial nuclear power industry, and our group continues to play a vital role in plant operations today. About 70% of our members have qualified for reactor operator roles and you could be next! Our experience as reactor operators is key to defining and improving how nuclear power plants are run in control rooms worldwide. We also specialize in reactor core physics testing, where we have developed technologies like Dynamic Rod Worth Measurements and Subcritical Physics Testing, which ensure that the as-built core aligns with the modeled core. We offer an array of reactor engineering services, including training tomorrow’s Station Nuclear Engineers, nuclear instrumentation diagnostics, fuel transfer and cask loading optimization, and much more. NucOps also leads the development and delivery of cutting-edge nuclear instrumentation technologies, such as the Vanadium Fixed Incore Instrumentation System. Innovation is part of the group’s culture, and we are always looking for the next creative idea to assist operating plants.

Your Day-to-Day:

When you join the NucOps team, you'll find a career that's as dynamic as it is diverse. The Nuclear Operations team offers a unique blend of office work and activities in the field. In the office, team members collaborate with new plant designers and licensed reactor operators to define the best and safest way to operate nuclear plants. You will acquire knowledge about integrated plant operations to develop or update the way control room operators run plants with operating procedures. You will then validate various scenarios in control room simulators, before they are used to train reactor operators and implemented in plants worldwide. Through one-on-one mentoring, you will learn our test methods and get time in the field (including in control rooms) to refine your knowledge and experience testing first-hand. Your scope will include the operating fleet (integrating operating experience and new scenarios) and the next generation of nuclear plants (SMR and microreactors), giving you learning and development opportunities in both worlds. Your responsibilities will also include designing new incore instrumentation, developing and maintaining our testing equipment, completing test preparation and reporting. In the field, you will support utility reactor operators by performing critical activities in their control rooms.

This full-time opportunity is based at the Westinghouse Headquarters in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. This is not a remote role because you will have to learn how to operate test equipment and perform in control room simulators. This position is hybrid requiring 2 days/week minimum on-site at our Westinghouse Global Headquarters in Cranberry, PA.  This role requires exceptional performance under pressure, strong communication skills for customer interactions, and the physical ability to handle test equipment. You'll travel to customer sites to perform testing (2 to 4 times a year and 5 to 15 days per trip) or for short fieldwork assignments. Furthermore, you'll be expected to obtain unescorted site access to customer sites which requires compliance with industry fitness-for-duty standards and participation in Westinghouse's behavioral observation program.

Who You Are:

As an ideal candidate, you'll bring the following qualifications and characteristics to our team:

Educational Background: Possesses a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.4. Candidates with a strong interest in nuclear plant operations including students holding a Reactor Operator license at a university reactor are highly encouraged to apply. Legal Status: Must be a U.S. Citizen or have permanent resident status (sponsorship is not available). Top Performer: Someone who demonstrates excellence and stands apart from your peers. Someone who performs well under pressure.

Desirable Experience in the following technical areas is not required but will be favorably considered:

Reactor Operator License: Holds a Reactor Operator License for University or Research Reactor (or previously held). Prior Professional Experience: Any previous professional experience, including internships, co-ops, part-time jobs, etc. Nuclear Detection Equipment: Familiarity with the use of nuclear detection equipment.
