Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Join us to perform responsibilities as a staff accountant for the Financial Reporting & Compliance Team within the Office of the CFO. Provides general accounting, financial reporting, research and analysis of accounting and financial reporting issues, and provides additional support to the Financial Reporting Team. Ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal accounting standards (SFFAS), applicable laws, regulations, DOE contractual requirements, and NREL and Alliance policies and procedures. This position reports to the General Ledger Manager.

Supports the daily balancing of the Oracle General Ledger module to the Oracle Project Accounting module and work with the General Ledger Team to resolve any discrepancies that may ariseSupports the General Ledger Team with the month-end closing process and ensure the accurate and timely recording of accounting transactionsSupports the General Ledger Team with the monthly trended trial balance reviewPrepares trial balance reconciliations between NREL and DOE at an accounting flexfield level, the uncosted balances reconciliation between NREL and DOE, and all other periodic reconciliations as required by the DOE or NREL managementPerforms and conducts analysis of balance sheet and other account reconciliations and supporting schedules, reports on discrepancies and assists in monthly account resolutionsProvides support for cash management activities, including check and ACH run validations, as well as alternating days for daily drawdown and outstanding check estimatesRecords cash and check receipts transactions in Oracle for timely bank depositsProvides support for internal and external audit requests as needed, including the timely and accurate preparation of audit schedulesEnsures compliance with financial operations policies and procedures, and ensure adequate controls are in place and operating effectively.Assists with the preparation and transmission of the Laboratory’s financial data to the Standard Accounting and Reporting System (STARS) at the U.S. Department of EnergyOther accounting and financial operations duties as assigned.

Basic QualificationsBachelor's Degree in accounting, finance or a related field and 2 or more years of experience in accounting or a related field or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, Master's Degree accounting, finance or a related field or equivalent relevant education/experience.

* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required QualificationsGeneral working knowledge of GAAP.  Experience with Microsoft Excel and demonstrated data aggregation and spreadsheet skills.  Accuracy, timeliness and meeting critical deadlines.  

Preferred QualificationsPrior government contractor experienceExperience with Oracle financial applications or other large accounting system.Demonstrated written and oral communication skills with a variety of customers and management levels.Detail oriented and proactive in issue identification and ability to provide solutions to a variety of problems.  Ability to work well with people across multiple organizations and management levels.  Ability to handle multiple responsibilities concurrently and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $65,100 - $107,400

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
