About this opportunity:

The Staff Advanced Process Control Engineer will play a lead role in developing, promoting, and maintaining Advanced Process Controls tools to continuously improve the safety, reliability, and business performance of the refinery operations. This role will develop and maintain standards, coach and train Process Controls Engineers, and support complex process controls efforts. This role will also support the development of Advanced Process Control capabilities at other Cenovus downstream sites.

What you’ll do:

The Staff Advanced Process Control Engineer will be responsible for driving the technical depth and site influence of the Process Controls team through Technical Excellence Leadership. This is expected to be completed through individual contribution as well as mentoring and coaching of the site Process Controls Engineers. This role will develop and implement standard processes, lead diverse teams to fix and improve plant performance/processes, support unit outages/Turnarounds, and support the overall refinery initiatives. This role will also provide mentoring and coaching of other site Process Controls personnel regarding DMC and other Advanced Process Controls applications. This role will also provide day-to-day process controls support to a portion of the refinery.

Advises leadership on technical, capability and strategic matters, leading to wise business decisions. Steers the development of solutions and new opportunities that make a significant contribution to Cenovus

Contributes to the success of the team, leading by example in terms of learning, sharing of ideas and building capability. Coaches and mentors throughout Cenovus to build distinctive capability in our staff, ensuring a healthy talent pipeline

Operates routinely across functional and business silos, and externally via extended networks, to access and use subject matter expertise

Applies scientific rigor to evaluations despite business pressure and constraints; prioritizes and sets clear direction, and boundaries in delivery of results

Drives cross team interactions; comfortable leading multidiscipline teams and providing recommendations to senior leadership

Maintains site engineering practices across the Process Controls field, approving changes and deviations, and incorporating industry standard methodologies and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP)

Network with Cenovus central Downstream Technical Services teams, other Cenovus refinery and manufacturing sites and industry groups/networks to capture best practices. Network with Cenovus Downstream Process Controls teams to increase the utilization of DMC and other Advanced Process Control applications across the company

Develop where necessary and lead Cenovus CoP (Community of Practice) forums activities as well as participate in/present to industry technology forums

Who you are:

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field

Minimum 12 years’ experience working in refining or relevant industry

Experience in multiple process units and a broad working knowledge of Honeywell control systems and AspenTech DMC and Inferrentials

Additionally, proficiency in codes and standards related to refinery process controls such as:

ISA 18.2 (Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries)

EEMUA Publication 191 (Alarm Systems. A guide to design, management, and procurement)

ISA 101.01 (Human Machine Interfaces for Process Automation Systems)

ISA 106.00.01 (Procedural Automation for Continuous Process Operations)

IEC 63303 (Human machine interfaces for process automation systems)
