Description
The Staff Attorney Legal Immigration- serves in a leadership position at the forefront of representation of low-income clients and/or those living with HIV. The role will assist GMHC clients in all matters related to immigration law including advising, application assistance and holistic representation to achieve clients’ goal through advocacy, representation before various tribunals/courts, and training. They will work closely with other attorneys and other legal staff to identify systemic legal problems and develop and implement measures to address them. Other core roles include sustaining productive collaborations with partners, grant reporting, in conjunction with departmental leadership.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Staff Attorney- Legal immigration is responsible for the following:
+ Comprehensive legal needs assessments of all clients at intake and regular reassessment to identify new legal needs and problems and provide referrals for other identified needs including Social Determinants of Health, and other services needed by clients.
+ Provides direct legal services to clients in the area of immigration legal services. This includes but not limited to- Know Your Rights presentations, legal counsel, legal referrals, and direct representations before USCIS, EOIR, and BIA on cases involving asylum, Adjustment of Status, VAWAs, TPS, Deferred Action, U and T visas, family-based petitions, and inadmissibility waivers.
+ Support with supervision of paralegal staff to ensure holistic, high quality legal representation to clients is provided. Monitor substantive legal work and provide consultation and advice to colleagues within the agency.
+ Participates in client ‘walk in’ and follow up and helps maintain immigration appointments calendar
+ Client education about legal issues and available services as part of the resolution of a legal problem; and
+ Outreach, technical assistance and education to community-based health and human service providers about legal issues and services available Immigrants and those affected by HIV in order to ensure timely and appropriate referrals.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Attorney- Legal immigration is also responsible for performing the following duties on an ongoing basis:
+ Track all activities, including the provision of services and the achievement of outcomes in appropriate daily logs, an electronic database, and an individual dashboard. Assist with the preparation of monthly and other reports and work to make sure that the department is audit-ready and,
+ Monitor contract compliance by ensuring that client charts contain all necessary documentation
Requirements
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
+ Must have a JD Degree from an accredited law school
+ Must be admitted to practice law in New York State
+ Must be admitted or eligible for admission in either the Southern or Eastern District of New York
+ Must be registered with the Office of Court Administration
SPECIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all the following:
+ Should be an experienced legal professional with a strong background in immigration laws (at least 2 years), and a deep commitment to advancing clients rights
+ Possesses intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, e.g. Word, Excel, etc.
+ Fluency in a language other than English; ideally a language that reflects the linguistic needs of the department’s clients i.e. Spanish.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with clients and staff.
+ The applicant must have basic cultural competency to work with a diverse staff and clientele, especially those who identify with the LGBTQI community, low-income people, racial minorities, immigrants, and people living with disabilities.
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently.
