And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.** **Job Description** Staff editors on the Home Discovery team are responsible for writing, editing and producing packages to help our readers move through a particular topic or storyline. Staff editors must possess knowledge of the newsroom and build fluency in all topics covered. They work collaboratively, exercising news judgment and may be assigned to lengthy projects according to newsroom needs. **Job Responsibilities:** + Collaborate with editors and reporters to generate and enhance coverage, including suggesting new storytelling methods or digital features and acting as the Home team’s representative to other departments or for large projects + Write lively and compelling summaries and headlines in a manner that is consistent with Times style + Monitor and respond to news developments; plan ahead for coverage of news events by collaborating with participating desks and helping to ensure all needed angles are covered + Work with features desk editors to help plan for promotion of coverage, develop home page plans for big events and pitch in on day to day features promotion + Work with product teams on new ideas, iterating, testing and developing new ways for readers to interact with our content + To support the Home team mission and stay up to date on news topics and team workflow, may train and serve as a home page producer or other roles as needed + Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. + This role reports to the Deputy Editor Story Lines. + This position will include a weekend shift and may include some evening shifts and is NY-Hybrid. **Basic Qualifications:** + Three or more years of experience as a journalist or digital news editor + Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics + Ability to quickly respond to breaking news while showing creativity and initiative in framing + Capacity to work well under pressure, setting priorities among many tasks and keeping up with the demands of multiple editors and supervisors + Sensitivity to visual design and user experience This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
