Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Staff Optical Engineer to join our team of creative and diverse engineers within the Laser & Sensor Subsystems Department. The position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.
As industry pioneers and leaders, the Laser and Sensor organization provides enabling state-of-the-art technology engineered into a variety of systems and missions. The organization provides integrated system expertise for primary products which include high-energy and high-peak power lasers, beam control and optical subsystems, laser and optical communications, and EO/IR sensor subsystems, which range from component design and development through system integration.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Leading optical design for the development of laser, optical communications, and beam control subsystem solutions
• Support to programs, research and development activities and new business capture
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline with 12+ years of experience in optical design, or Master’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline with 10+ years of experience in optical design, or PhD in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline with 8 years of experience in optical design
Fluency in Code V and/or Zemax OpticStudio software modeling tools
Experience generating optical system/subsystem requirements
Experience preparing and briefing packages to both internal and external customers, communicating technical approaches and findings
Must have the ability to obtain/maintain a DOD Top Secret clearance
Preferred Qualifications
Experience performing stray light modeling using software tools such as FRED.
Solid understanding of optomechanical design practices
Experience performing optical integration and test activities
Understanding of lasers and fiber amplifiers, optics, and knowledge of typical optical diagnostic and characterization setups as well as free-space alignment techniques. Diagnostics experience to include use of interferometers, wavefront sensors, and near-field, far-field and thermal imaging techniques
Experience supporting requirements and architecture development and conducting performance modeling
Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance

Salary Range: $188,200.00 - $282,200.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
