Staff Full Stack Software Engineer - Security

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

About Team/Role-

The Coinbase Security Services Group (SSG) is responsible for driving key security controls, including Identity and Access Management (IAM), IT Asset Management (ITAM), and Logging. In support of this mission, our team members build, integrate, and operate tools–both custom and off-the-shelf–that ensure that our internal systems have the right access controls implemented, security policies applied, and logs collected. We’re looking for a unicorn: You enjoy writing software, are comfortable building backends and frontends alike, and have a strong understanding of security best practices. Most of your teammates are in North America, so being a self-starter who’s comfortable working independently and communicating asynchronously is key. The tools and features you build will be used by every Coinbase employee, and will play a key role in keeping our and our customers’ crypto safe.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

Architecting, designing, and building new tools, or key new features of existing tools, to meet evolving ITAM and IAM requirements. These tools will focus on enforcing the principle of least privilege, managing operational risk, and identifying suspicious behavior. Implementing key security features, such as role-based access control and multi-party approval capabilities, that help prevent access abuse and misuse. Collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, including Security Engineering, Security Operations, and Compliance teams, on cross-functional requirements and joint projects.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

You’re an experienced developer who knows how to write secure software and is comfortable working independently. You can turn use cases and requirements into code confidently, and when you get stuck you keep trying different ideas until you figure it out. You enjoy writing sensible, intuitive UIs as much as you do elegant, efficient backend code. You know when to use Mongo and when to use Snowflake, and you wonder why any APIs still use XML or CSV when JSON exists. While we aren’t looking for a security expert for this role, we need someone who’s familiar with threats and security best practices, as these drive our software development and integration use cases. If you need clarification about why we need a specific feature or requirement, you probably won’t be able to ask the team for a few hours, so it’s helpful if you already have good intuition about our risks and the strategies we use to address them.

Nice to haves:

Go, Ruby, Python, and React experience Experience writing code to run on Kubernetes deployed to AWS Comfortable writing complex, scalable SQL queries
