GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Operating Room- Registered Nurse (RN) Circulator is an integral part of the perioperative team, serves as an advocate for patients who are under anesthesia and/or sedation. Responsibilities include ensuring that surgical asepsis is adhered to during the surgical procedure, keeping track and conducting an inventory of supplies and equipment used during and after the surgical procedure, or performing the surgical “time-out”.  Ensures that surgical asepsis is adhered to during the surgical procedure and performs perioperative RN responsibilities as directed.  

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

1.    Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the standards, policies, and procedures of the Medical Center, Nursing Services, and Chapter Six of the Code of Iowa.
2.    Assessing patients prior to surgery and alleviating their concerns 
3.    Assess the health status of the patient in order to develop an individualized plan of care by collecting, categorizing, and interpreting data (physical and psychosocial) from documented information, observation, patient/family interview and other health care team members.  
4.    Assess the patient while including the nursing diagnosis and nursing interventions necessary to achieve optimal patient outcomes related                                        to the patient’s identified surgical, mental, physical, psycho-social and cultural needs.
5.    Document nursing activities to provide a permanent record of safety standards and precautions used, continuity of care, quality improvement and professional accountability. 
6.    Gathering all supplies needed for the operation. 
7.    Plan, supervise and assist with the transfer of the patient to the operating room table to protect the patient and personnel from injury.
8.    Position the patient to provide access to the operative site while maximizing patient safety and comfort.
9.    Identify the patient to ensure the patient, procedure and operative site correspond.
10.    Evaluates the effectiveness of the care given by the perioperative care team.
11.    Establish and maintain a surgically clean environment to reduce the potential for infection by applying the principles of the potential for infection by applying the principles of antisepsis, decontamination, disinfection, sanitation, sterilization and environmental monitoring. 
12.    Establish and maintain a safe environment to protect the patient and the health care team by monitoring the patient (physiologically and psychologically) and the environment and by implementing safety procedures. 
13.    Establish and maintain a sterile field to reduce potential for infection by teaching and supervising the application of principles of aseptic technique and continual monitoring of the sterile field. 
14.    Coordinate support services needs during surgery by anticipating and communicating patient and surgical team needs.
15.    Administers medications and evaluates their effectiveness.
16.    Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols.
17.    Participates in orientation of new personnel.
18.    Participates in development and attainment of departmental and Nursing Services goals.
19.    Participates in development of generic and unit-specific standards.
20.    Participates in development and implementation of performance improvement activities.
21.    Participates in unit meetings and conferences for the betterment of patient care.
22.    Communicates effectively, practices effective problem identification and resolution skills and uses lines of authority appropriately.

1.    Demonstrated proficiency in the RN circulating role.
2.    Demonstrated knowledge and skill in applying principles of aseptic and sterile technique. 
3.    Demonstrated ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
4.    Solid understanding of patient safety and precautions.
5.    In-depth knowledge of surgical operation procedures.
6.    Outstanding organizational habits and ability to critically think and troubleshoot. 
7.    Demonstrates skill in the following intra-operative nursing behaviors:

12.    Completes and maintains unit specific training and competency monitors (with passing scores) in unit-defined time frames in order to maintain employment.  
13.    Completes all annual hospital-wide mandatory training within defined timeframe (i.e. safety, corporate compliance, confidentiality).
14.    Documents in a timely, accurate and concise manner.
15.    Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
16.    Demonstrates ability to document in EMR.
17.    Demonstrates consistently a team approach to care.
18.    Demonstrates effective communication strategies.
19.    Adheres to all policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing.
2.    Two years’ experience in perioperative nursing with successful completion of additional educational preparation specific to the role of Circulating RN, preferred. 
3.    Certification in Basic Life Support (Health Care Provider), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire. 
4.    Capable and competent in computer data entry and general program navigation.
5.    Ability to perform call requirements, as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Certification in area of specialty Certified Nurse periOperative Registered Nurse (CNOR).
