**Responsibilities:**
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Provides comprehensive patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, design and material selection of all assistive devices, fitting and adapting of all assistive devices, and coordination of patient care with other health care professionals, with emphasis on custom devices. Coordinates and communicates with appropriate health care providers in the prosthetic/orthotic evaluation. Trains and mentors lower classified staff.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Develops treatment protocols for patients. Obtains patient history history by interview and review of available records to determine the need for a specific device. Evaluates patient visually and manually to determine the condition, range of motion, and muscular strength. Determines the needs of the patient to provide an appropriate and realistic prescription. Provides information to the patient, family, and involved health professionals regarding potential advantages and disadvantages of a device. Analyzes the data obtained by empirical methods to prepare a recommendation.
+ Develops the solution to a patient’s prosthetic/orthotic problem by appropriate evaluation to achieve proper function. Conducts continuing periodic evaluations. Replicates the patient’s body or body segments to provide an accurate anatomical impression to be used in the fabrication of an orthotic or prosthetic device. Demonstrates a properly fitting prosthetic/orthotic design by utilizing accepted prosthetic/orthotic techniques to achieve optimum fit, function, and cosmesis. Evaluates optimum prosthetic or orthotic function. Evaluates the sagittal, transverse, and coronal planes to provide maximum function.
+ Interprets data on measurement forms by reviewing numerical values to determine appropriate procedures. Modifies patient model by making necessary rectifications to ensure a proper fit. Designs and fabricates prescribed custom devices by assembling selected materials to prepare for fitting. Evaluates a device to identify deviations from prescribed standards to correct impaired fit and function. Establishes inspection system to systematically assess the appropriateness of technical procedures at various stages to reduce product deficiencies. Establishes sound safety protocols for personnel use of appropriate lab materials and machinery to achieve maximum safety.
+ Liaises with appropriate health care providers in the communication of prosthetic/orthotic evaluation to achieve ultimate patient care. Communicates roles and expectations of facility employees. Trains and mentors lower classified staff. Establishes procedures for patient care that comply with accepted medical/legal requirements. Keeps abreast of trends as they pertain to the Orthotics and Prosthetics field by membership in professional organizations; attending meetings, workshops, and seminars. Receives and reviews professional literature.

**MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
+ Bachelor's degree in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics and 1 year of supervised clinical experience required
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
**LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS**
+ Board Certified in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics by American Board of Certification (ABC) for Orthotics and Prosthetics upon hire required
+ CPO - Certified Prosthetist Orthotist from an approved NCOPE (National Commission on Orthotics and Prosthetics Education) program upon hire required
