User Experience is the function that applies principles and techniques of discovery, research, design, and content strategy to define the experience a user has in a product.


As a Staff Design System Designer, you will participate in setting the strategic direction, evolution, and adoption of Paylocity’s design system, Citrus, ensuring it delivers best-in-class experiences across our product ecosystem. You will drive complex, cross-functional initiatives, mentor and empower designers, and collaborate closely with engineering and product leaders to shape the future of design at Paylocity. Your ability to think systematically, influence at all levels, and advocate for design excellence will be critical in scaling our design system. This role will report to the Design System Manager. 


Responsibilities: 

Lead Design System Evolution – Drive the strategic direction of the Citrus design system, evolving its components, patterns, and guidelines to meet the needs of our product teams and users. Lead Complex Initiatives – Independently drive high-impact design system projects, aligning teams across the organization and influencing at a strategic level. Deep Collaboration with Engineering and Product – Partner closely with engineering leadership to shape implementation strategies, ensuring design and development alignment. Advance System Thinking and Consistency – Establish best practices for system architecture, design tokens, accessibility, and component usability to create a cohesive experience across all products. Mentor and Grow Design System Expertise – Act as a leader and mentor, providing guidance and coaching to senior designers and product teams adopting the design system. Facilitate Cross-Functional Communication – Drive conversations with leadership, advocating for the value of design systems while ensuring business and user needs are met. Evolve and Document Best Practices – Establish clear governance, contribution models, and documentation strategies to streamline system adoption and evolution. Lead Innovation and Experimentation – Explore and validate new patterns, interaction models, and technologies that advance the design system’s capabilities. Drive Accessibility and Inclusion – Set standards for inclusive design, ensuring accessibility best practices (WCAG) are deeply integrated into the system. Scale Adoption and Influence – Develop programs, training, and workshops that drive design system adoption, ensuring teams feel empowered to contribute and implement system components effectively. 

Required Experience: 

7+ years of UX/UI design experience, with at least 3 years dedicated to design systems. Deep expertise in system thinking, modular design, and component-driven UI development. Advanced proficiency in Figma component-based design, design tokens and front-end implementation considerations. Strong knowledge of accessibility best practices, WCAG guidelines, and inclusive design principles. Experience influencing and working cross-functionally with engineering and product leadership. Proven ability to drive strategic initiatives and align teams across an organization. Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to advocate for design systems at all levels. 

Preferred Skills 

Experience designing for enterprise SaaS products in an agile environment. Familiarity with front-end technologies (React, Storybook, CSS frameworks) and their role in design system implementation. Ability to measure the impact of a design system through qualitative and quantitative metrics. Background in AI/ML-driven design patterns and automation within design systems. Experience mentoring and developing designers in systems thinking and scalable design practices.
