Staff Quality Engineer, Problem Solving SME

About the Role – You will:

Lead problem-solving portfolio at the Proterra Powered facility in Greer, SC. Coach teams on problem solving, develop associate/team competency in a variety of problem-solving methods and tools to solve technical problems effectively and efficiently. Integrate structured problem solving into the day-to-day standard work at Proterra. Ensure on time resolution of issues providing systemic approach and prevent recurrence guidelines. This position will provide comprehensive support to Proterra Powered Quality and other leadership team. Must work with customer needs and passionate about exceeding their expectations  Act as the key quality contact for problem solving activities and technical reviews (onsite, offsite) and deliver results to customers as well as internal stakeholders. Responsible for issue resolution and quality improvement in the market and/or customer locations, including development issues, production issues, warranty and recall campaigns and promote proactive actions. Collaborate with the product engineering and advanced manufacturing organizations to collect and analyze problems in development. Other duties, projects assigned by the Proterra leadership and management.

This position will be part of the Enterprise Quality group that supports Proterra Powered all aspects of the business including design, development, customer and operations in Greer, SC. You will report to the Enterprise Quality Manager and collaborate with cross functional team including but not limited to direct customers, Operations and Quality in Greer, SC and Engineering in Burlingame, CA. You will work on special projects assigned by the Director of Powered Quality and collaborate with other members located throughout North America. 

About You:

Your Education and Experience Includes:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, Masters’ preferred or equivalent experience. 15+ years’ manufacturing / quality experience in a fast-paced customer focused environment – automotive experience preferred. 8+ years of proven track record in problem solving projects that resolved critical bottlenecks. delivered cost saving and impact to the organization and/ or customer. Ability to resolve problem with the ultimate focus on ensuring prevent recurrence and ability to coach / mentor team members. Prior working experience on DFM, DFA and DFS techniques implementation within manufacturing industry, automotive products preferred but not required. Formal problem-solving certification(s) from a recognized institution (Shanin Journeyman or higher, Black Belt, Master Black Belt, or similar), strongly preferred Demonstrated experience coaching multiple problem-solving methodologies such as Shainin, Red X, DMAIC-R, Practical Problem Solving, Kepner Tregoe (KT), and Lean Six Sigma or similar. Extensive experience working and implementing problem solving tools and techniques including but not limited to 8D, 5Why, IS/IS NOT, Fault tree analysis, A3, including risk-based approach using AIAG-VDA FMEA, AIAG CQI 20 or similar. Knowledge and understanding of ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 quality systems, AIAG, VDA standards. Experience with measurement techniques and measurement data analysis in mechanical, electrical, temperature using industry standard devices. In depth understanding of statistical tools and techniques including but not limited to Probability studies, MSA, Gage R&R, capability studies. Strong focus on data and data driven approach with an ability to present the solution using analytical techniques and results. Design for six sigma (DFSS) understanding, strongly preferred. Proficient computer skills that may include the following applications: Microsoft Office Suite, Oracle, Arena, 3DX, MS Teams, jira, confluence, or similar applications Physical Demands:  May work various shifts as needed; may be requested to travel to Proterra or supplier locations.  Lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.  Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.  Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations, depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.  Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.  Environmental Demands:  Ability to work in manufacturing environment with extreme heat and cold conditions.  Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.   Works with irritant chemicals, gases, etc.
