Staff Software Engineer – Advanced Chassis Controls
Job Description

Workplace Classification:

Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Milford, MI) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The successful candidate will spearhead the development of state-of-the-art control systems for future vehicles, integrating cutting-edge actuation and sensory technologies like propulsion, braking, steering, active aerodynamics, and rear steering. Our software development strategy is designed to be flexible and scalable across various platforms, starting with next-generation high-performance hyper-cars.

The candidate should have extensive knowledge of modern control and real-time optimization strategies and be adept at conveying complex technical ideas to diverse audiences, including collaborators in the United States and key academic partners. A strong grasp of embedded controls and software development processes is critical for success in this role.


The Role:

Lead Control Systems Development: Spearhead the creation and implementation of advanced vehicle motion control strategies, including robust software architecture, integration, and testing for vehicle systems.

Design and Architect Solutions: Develop cutting-edge control solutions across multiple domains, designing scalable and reusable architectures that push the boundaries of control and system simulation technologies.

Enhance Processes and Standards: Continuously improve group efficiency by refining processes, championing control requirements, leading Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL), and in-vehicle development, and conducting peer reviews.

Collaborate and Mentor: Lead initiatives and contribute to the technology roadmap, ensuring cross-team collaboration while providing technical mentorship and developing training strategies to elevate team capabilities.

Manage Projects and Ensure Compliance: Oversee project management tasks, ensuring timely milestone completion while adhering to GM processes and safety standards, with frequent travel to Michigan and occasional travel to other parts of USA and Europe as needed.

Innovate and Apply Technologies: Drive the exploration and application of the latest control technologies, balancing innovation with the deployment of advanced methods to enhance GM's capabilities and meet program goals.

Protect Intellectual Property: Innovate and protect intellectual property through the development of novel solutions, patents, and publications.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

7+ year's experience in developing control systems and associated software, and/or technical leadership in this area.

Bachelor's degree in engineering related field.

Proficiency in control system theory and its application to embedded systems, including but not limited to state feedback control, adaptive control, and model predictive control.

In-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of chassis and vehicle dynamics controls.

Proven ability to develop efficient calibration strategies that meet both objective and subjective vehicle (or its sub-systems) performance requirements.

Demonstrated experience in developing embedded software in compliance with GM production software standards.

Strong analytical skills for addressing unusual and complex problems.

Proactive, results-driven individual with a high level of initiative and accountability.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, interfacing with GM engineers globally.

Experience with embedded C programming, MATLAB/Simulink modeling, and code generation.

Experience with vehicle dynamics modeling, simulation and CarSim.

Proficiency in utilizing Vehicle SPY, INCA tool set, and CANalyzer for vehicle communication and analysis.

Must hold a valid driver’s license. Approximately 6 weeks of travel per year is anticipated, including winter testing in Northern Michigan and travel to testing tracks in the US and internationally.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

10+ year's experience in developing control systems and associated software, and/or technical leadership in this area.

M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent)

Demonstrated proficiency in writing technical reports and delivering effective presentations.

Experience in automotive product release and specification process

Experience with advanced statistical analysis, signals processing, filter design, optimization, system identification and advanced state estimation methods.
