Staff Systems Engineer - In-Vehicle Ethernet
Job Description

Workplace Status:

Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

Our Embedded Platforms Infrastructure team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on building the software platforms that underpins how controller safety, communications, cybersecurity, memory, over-the-air programming and power management functions across the electronics portfolio of all of our vehicles.

The Role:

We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to join our team in our journey of defining and executing the backbone of our company's future—the next generation Vehicle Electrical and Software Architecture. The Mechatronics Infrastructure organization is looking for a Staff System Engineer who will define and lead the development of the in-vehicle Ethernet network across all of GM’s vehicle platforms.

This is a very critical and central role in which you will lead the team in developing the most efficient and optimal in-vehicle Ethernet architecture. You will align strategies, stakeholders, and designs to deliver a product that exceeds our customers' expectations.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Champion enterprise in-vehicle Ethernet communication strategy and roadmap. Design and develop in-vehicle Ethernet systems, including network architecture, topology, and communication protocols across all networking layers of the OSI model. Lead development of configuration and optimization of Ethernet networks and security settings. Support testing and validation initiatives to ensure proper functionality and performance. Work in lockstep with semiconductor teams to ensure system-level perspective in selecting Ethernet hardware components and driving semiconductor roadmaps. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of Ethernet systems into the overall vehicle architecture. Create and maintain technical documentation, directly and indirectly through other team members. Examples include but are not limited to system specifications, network diagrams, test plans, and troubleshooting guides. Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to other team members and promote a team environment that values the backgrounds, opinions, and ideas of everyone. Lead team to continuously improve processes, methodologies, and tools. Stay up to date with the latest industry standards, protocols, and trends related to in-vehicle Ethernet systems. Incorporate best practices and emerging technologies into system design and development. Actively represent GM in relevant working groups within IEEE 802 and Open Alliance. 

Additional Job Description

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications): 

Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related areas.Ten or more years of experience planning, designing, and implementing complex computer networks. A proven history of designing and implementing networks with IEEE TSN standards. Expert level knowledge of computer networking protocols, network architecture, and communication standards, including automotive Ethernet technologies, TCP/IP, and SOME/IP.  Knowledge and end-to-end awareness of the hardware and software components (PHYs, switches, hardware interfaces, connectors, cables, software stack, protocols) that make up a network in the automotive domain. Advanced knowledge of the internals of the data-link layer components (for example, switch internals and communication software stack). Experience with network simulation and analysis tools, programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python), and software development for embedded systems. Knowledge of software development lifecycle and testing methodologies. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to see and own the end-to-end perspective. Excellent communication skills with the ability to, for a wide variety of audiences, adapt the explanation and motivation of complex technical concepts. Excellent teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with peers, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and translate feedback, needs, and solutions. Demonstrated ability to ideate, formulate and execute winning technical strategies and innovations. Evidence of mentoring and developing others into technical experts. Evidence of ability to master new technical areas and relentless desire for knowledge. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related experience. Engineering and Embedded Software Systems, with a focus on in-vehicle networking for safety-critical and real-time systems. Experience with deploying MACsec, key agreement protocols, and other security-related networking functions. Experience with 10BASE-T1S, 100/1000BASE-T1, and multigig Automotive Ethernet networks.  Advanced understanding of network troubleshooting tools. Experience with Open Alliance solutions (e.g., TC10/14). Knowledge of and experience with real-time operating systems, embedded software architectures, and AUTOSAR.  Experience with Serializer/Deserializer technologies and MIPI standards.

Compensation:

The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

The salary range for this role is $186,200 to $285,300. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
