Role Summary This Staff Thermal Engineer will provide technical expertise and leadership for supplier designed components. Specifically, this role will focus on ORFM (Outside Heat-exchanger/Radiator Fan Module) design and release ensuring the full assembly is designed to meet the requirements, package, and cost requirements for each vehicle program. This role will interface internally and externally to cascade requirements and oversee design, validation, and release process. This position is open to hire in both Plymouth, MI and Irvine, CA. Responsibilities Design & release the ORFM including radiator, OHX/condenser, fan, shroud, and active-grille shutter (AGS), actuators, harness, etc. Interface with Body, Studio, Packaging, Attribute, NVH, Aerodynamics, and CAE teams to ensure package, optimal performance, and efficiency targets met Lead supply chain with engineering requirements through RFQ and sourcing Manage & approve suppliers on design, release, tooling, and validation Support critical program milestones and build events, e.g. Virtual Release, Virtual Build, Design Verification Build, Manufacturing Verification Build, etc Develop and mature concepts and advanced designs following design creation process, iterating with the CAD and simulation teams to achieve performance targets and change management Interface with thermal systems team to define characteristics and requirements Work closely with suppliers and CAD team in component design and assembly in CATIA V6 (experience preferred) Provide guidance and direction to the CAD team through concept, pre-production and post SOP development Sign-off engineering specs for the ORFM and AGS assembly Develop other foundation documents including risk assessment/management, DFMEA, DVP, and Functional Safety Sign-off DV (design verification) and PV (production verification) plans/procedures and physical testing to validate functionality and reliability per appropriate documentation Manage and coordinate all BOMs (Enovia direct experience preferred), piece cost, investment cost, weight target, and part procurement for all pre-production build phases Understand Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) for the assembly, providing guidance for both internal and external manufacturing supply options Qualifications Minimum BSME degree with in mechanical/automotive engineering 6+ years of experience related to heat exchanger design, release, and production Tier 1 supplier experience on heat exchangers and heat exchange module a plus Proficiency in CAD for design and release; CATIA V6 preferred Field experience of manufacturing and logistics for heat exchangers and heat exchanger modules Knowledge on thermal, mechanical, NVH, durability, corrosion, and electrical requirements for heat exchangers and heat exchanger modules Experience on heat pump technology and development a plus Experience on at least one full product cycle from concept creation to mass production Ability to work and communicate effectively with peers and leadership Ability to work independently and proactively in fast-paced environment Be able to lead small teams to deliver across multiple cross-functional demands Ability to travel to California/Illinois/Georgia to support build events, vehicle evaluations, & project handoff and training Equal Opportunity Rivian is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local fair employment practices laws.
