Stagehand

Summary/Objective
A stagehand performs tasks involving physical labor for various live production projects. This includes both large and small traditional theatrical spaces, convention centers, outdoor venues, concert arenas, film sets, theatrical performances, sporting events, graduations and rock shows. The position may operate a variety of hand and power tools.

Stagehands are usually skilled in multiple disciplines, including rigging, carpentry, stage electrics, stage lighting, audio/projection, wardrobe and props. Stagehands are often responsible for operating the systems and performing cues during shows or taping and also for the repair and maintenance of equipment.

Essential Functions

1. Maintains a clean job site: picks up all tools and equipment and secures job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.

2. Performs material handling and storage.

3. Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings problems to the attention of the job steward/employer.

4. Loads and unloads props, sets, boxes and stacks of equipment from trucks.

5. Set up and operate lighting, audio, carpentry, wardrobe and projection equipment

6. Perform spotlight operation during performances

7. Construct set pieces

8. Set up risers, stages and music equipment  

9. Maintain costumes, including laundry, quick changes and repairs.

Work Environment           

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and dirt. Working surfaces can be concrete, ice or carpet. Fork lifts, scissor lifts or condors may be present.

Physical Demand              

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs various levels of physical labor. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects. The position requires good manual dexterity and multilimb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina. A stagehand is expected to be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. A stagehand is expected to be able to climb stairs.

Riggers are a specialty skill in charge of the things that hang. They use safety gear similar to that used for mountain climbing. Riggers often work at heights of up to 90’ in the air and are expected to be able to pull chain and other working lines to similar heights.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work         

This is an on call position with no guaranteed of the amount of work. Days and hours of work vary with each job. This position frequently requires long hours, weekend and holiday work. Referrals may be intermittent due to the seasonal nature of the work.

Travel           

Travel is primarily local, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be offered.

Preferred Education and Experience  

A stagehand must be 18 years of age and have adequate transportation to be considered for referral.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications     

Must possess two forms of government issued ID, at least one that satisfies the I9 requirement, to be considered for referral.
