ABOUT THE PATIENT'S COMPENSATION FUND
The Patient's Compensation Fund (PCF) was created in 1975 to provide an affordable and guaranteed medical malpractice coverage system for the private healthcare providers in the state. The Patient's Compensation Fund is an off-State budget entity of the State, which is 100 percent self-funded, and governed by the PCF Oversight Board. The Patient's Compensation Fund provides protection for the healthcare system, keeping costs down, and providing a guaranteed pool of funds to pay those citizens injured from medical malpractice of private care providers.

ABOUT THIS POSITION
In this position you will fulfill the legislative mandate of the Patients Compensation Fund to provide efficient and economic claims handling so affordable excess medical coverage is available to licensed health care providers in the State of Louisiana; work closely with the primary insurance carrier and primary defense attorney to determine the facts of each case and to evaluate the exposure of the Patients Compensation Fund; negotiate settlements on behalf of the Fund; and direct counsel for PCF in defense of the Fund.

NOTE REGARDING THE ADVERSTISED PAY:
This position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and may be filled as a State Risk Adjuster 2-4. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position provides the opportunity to advance within this job series.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR
Six years of full-time work experience in any field plus one year of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR
A bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in insurance claims adjusting, examining, or investigation; accident investigation, legal research, project management, contract management, or construction management; OR
An advanced degree in risk management or insurance, business or public administration, safety or legal studies, construction management, or a health services field.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from the State Risk Adjuster 1 by the assignment of more complex claims and claims that are in litigation.
Differs from the State Risk Adjuster 3 by the absence of responsibility for performing the full range of adjusting tasks and by a lower claim payment authority limit.
Examples of Work
Consults with claimants and/or their attorneys concerning the possibilities of settlement of the claim, with the advice and consent of higher level insurance claims adjusters.
Attends and participates in mediations toward resolution of disputed issues and/or settlement of claim.
Attends trials and testifies as needed.
Participates in investigations of accidents and/or incidents that may expose the agency to a risk of loss.
Provides efficient and economic claims handling so affordable excess medical coverage is available to licensed health care providers in the State of Louisiana.
Works closely with the primary insurance carrier and primary defense attorney to determine the facts of each case and to evaluate the exposure of the Patients Compensation Fund.
Negotiates settlements on behalf of the Fund; and directs counsel for PCF, as needed, in defense of the Fund.
