Job Title Stationary Engineer Requisition JR000014804 Stationary Engineer (Open) Location St. Louis, MO Additional Locations Job Description Summary Summary of Position: Directs the activities of a team of technicians operating and maintaining central utility systems (including steam boilers, compressed air, breathing air, central air and water pollution control, process and sanitary wastewater collection and treatment, deionized water, process water, potable water, cooling tower water, chilled water, nitrogen, fire water, and fire protection systems) at a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. Ensures utility services are continuously provided to manufacturing operations and facilities, and administrative activities are continuously available and meet required specifications, including regulatory compliance. First-line supervisor, reports to Plant Utilities Manager. Job Description Job Duties: + Monitors operational status of central utilities systems 24/7/365. + Supervises and provides technical direction to Utilities personnel including System Specialists, Utility Specialists, Senior Maintenance Mechanics, and other Maintenance Mechanics, to ensure safe and effective work completion. + Lead daily performance meetings, weekly safety meetings, and track KPI’s. + Responds to utilities system equipment problems by directing troubleshooting initiatives to operators and maintenance mechanics to isolate causes and provide repairs. Purchase parts, and lead RCA activities to identify root cause. + Initiates bringing on-line backup/standby equipment into operation if needed and/or possible. + Track/trend equipment performance. + Assists Operations Shift Supervisor in responding to chemical spills and other emergency situations such as fires and medical emergencies across the site. + Communicates and coordinates activities with Operations Shift Supervisor, Manufacturing Supervisors, and Maintenance Supervisors regarding central utilities systems and services. + Escalates issues to the Chief Stationary Engineer and/or Plant Utilities Manager regarding urgent situations involving utilities systems or personnel they cannot resolve. + Calls in Utilities Maintenance Mechanics as needed for support after normal hours to resolve issues with critical utilities equipment. + Prepares and issues Safety Permits (Confined space, LOTO, Hot work, Line break, Demo, and barricades) for maintenance and construction activities involving plant utilities systems across the site. + Prepares and submits Work Orders for maintenance of utilities systems, utility processes, and utility infrastructures. + Ensures quality utilities are continuously provided, within specification, and at an optimal cost. Reviews batch records for accuracy and completeness. + Reviews and contributes to engineering project designs both for the department and for site-related projects. + Addresses union issues as first line supervisor. + Assists in coordinating plant shutdown activities. + Develops job specific Energy Control Plans for safe maintenance procedures. Department Specific Functions : + Collects and logs utilities system operational data. + Performs chemical analysis of boiler feed water samples. + Ensures compliance training needs of reports are met on time or rescheduled to prevent compliance lapses in personnel training. + Maintains shift and vacation schedules. + Coordinates with outside vendors and plant building owners fire alarm and fire suppression systems testing, maintenance, and repair. Requirements: Education : High School diploma, plus completion of technical school training on operation of steam boilers, or equivalent experience. Must possess a Class I, City of St. Louis Stationary Engineers License. Experience : Minimum of five years’ experience operating Steam boilers. Must be able to work a four on, four off, night shift schedule from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Preferred Skills/Qualifications: + Experience operating and maintaining air compressors, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, fans, and other central plant utilities equipment in a chemical process plant environment. + Demonstrated ability to effectively apply analytical and communications skills in emergency situations, and make sound decisions under pressure. + Ability to clearly communicate with and motivate subordinates. + Team leadership skills. + Ability to apply logical troubleshooting skills. + Ability to operate computer with typical office application programs (Word, Excel, etc.), as well as computerized control systems. + Solid general understanding of mechanical systems + Organizational Relationships/Scope: + Position reports to Plant Utilities Manager. Position reports through the Power Plant Chief Stationary Engineer for daily operational and technical matters. + Positions reporting to this job: Utility Specialists, System Specialists, and Senior Maintenance Mechanics. + Maintains frequent contact with Plant Utilities Manager, Power Plant Chief Stationary Engineer, Utilities Process Engineer, Operations Shift Supervisor, Manufacturing Supervisors, Maintenance Supervisors, and Plant Maintenance Facilitators. + The Power Plant Engineer is the round-the-clock leader of the Plant Utilities team on duty, which provides materials and services that are essential for the daily operation of the site’s manufacturing processes. Most manufacturing operations at the site are shut down in the event that one of the major central utility systems is unavailable. + Working Conditions: + Job requires the ability to work both inside and outside the Central Utilities Plant. Frequently requires entry into confined spaces that are hot, cold, noisy, dusty, or wet, as well as climbing to heights of 50-100 feet to monitor equipment, processes, and check and operate manual isolation valves.
