Coordinates the workflow operations for the complete reprocessing of reusable medical/surgical items and clinical equipment used for patient care in numerous patient care and clinical departments, including internal and external clinics. Performs duties related to the soiled collection, decontamination, assembly and preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instrumentation and patient equipment. Provides guidance and monitors the work of Sterile Processing technicians under the direction of the department manager. Assists with the management responsibilities related to staff scheduling, staff training and skill development, payroll, product acquisition, maintenance of Sterile Processing software systems and reprocessing service levels. Willing to accept new ideas and work under stressful conditions.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED High School or Equivalent (GED) MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Minimum two years of experience working in a healthcare sterile reprocessing work environment. Previous supervisor experience in a work setting preferred LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification issued by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) [formerly IAHCSMM] Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED Previous work experience in a Healthcare Central Service, Material Management or Sterile Processing Maintains the appropriate number and type of continuing education credits for each certification type. The physical, technical, and cognitive ability as well as the manual dexterity, to operate various sterilization and reprocessing equipment. Basic computer knowledge and skills. Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Demonstrates competency with the technical skills and operational workflow processes that are listed in the position specific standards of a Sterile Processing Technician. Provides direction and guidance to Sterile Processing Technicians on their job performance and operational workflow issues. Demonstrates communication and leadership skills by collaborating with members of the health care team to achieve quality reprocessing delivery systems. Actively participates in the implementation and monitoring of department policies and procedures. Demonstrates correct and safe techniques in the use of reprocessing and sterilization equipment, cleaning and disinfectant agents, and specific job tasks in accordance with product information and department policy/procedure. Assists in the orientation and training of newly hired and existing staff on the 2nd shift. Monitors general department operations, establishes work schedules, issues daily work assignments, and responds to requests for service on the 2nd shift. Acts as a 2nd shift resource to employees, which includes training/orienting, providing day-to-day work direction, and giving input on performance. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues.
