Sterile Processing & Distribution Director

Primary Purpose

Responsible for assuring operations in the Sterile Processing & Distribution areas are performed in a

timely, safe and cost effective manner to provide services that fulfill the needs of Parkland’s patients and staff.

 

Education

•Must have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field.

 

Experience

•Must have five years of supervisory experience in a healthcare environment.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

•May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for both the education and the experience requirements.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

•Must be a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by a nationally recognized

organization ASHCSP-American Society for Healthcare Central Supply Personnel or IAHCSMM International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management.

•Must have Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) by IAHCSMM OR be Certified in Sterile

Processing Management (CSPM) by CBSPD-Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution

within one year after initial date of employment or placement in job.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

•Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and have good organizational skills.

•Must be able to diagnose operational and productivity issues and identify needs.

•Must demonstrate a working knowledge of PC hardware, including a basic knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.

•Must have a thorough knowledge of sterilization techniques and procedures and of the equipment utilized in the Operating Room/Procedural areas.

 

Responsibilities

1. Ensures that assigned personnel understand how they can individually and collectively provide quality

customer service to the patients and staff of Parkland. Monitors employee progress to ensure

expectations are being met.

2. Maintains a positive working relationship with vendors, other hospitals, department employees and

with other hospital staff to ensure that good customer service is achieved.

3. Follows up on the order and inventory process for supplies, to ensure that items are available in a

timely manner.

4. Maintains current knowledge in Sterile Processing by participating in trade organizations, maintaining

central service technician certification, studying trade journals, attending seminars/workshops and

integrating this knowledge as appropriate into work.

5. Provides backup to all positions in assigned areas to ensure continuous workflow and maintain

appropriate quality standards.

6. Serves on various committees as needed to improve customer service, meet goals and address other

relevant issues.

 

Job Accountabilities

1. Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes, work flows, etc. for the area and

implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency that

support the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending

seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional

organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into

current work practices.

3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the

area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws,

accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and

guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.

4. Develops and monitors annual budgets that ensure the department has the necessary funds to

carry out the goals and objectives that have been established for the department.

5. Develops, implements, monitors, and revises annual goals and objectives for the department that

support the missions and objectives of Parkland.

6. Selects, trains, schedules, motivates, supervises, and evaluates employees making

recommendations for disciplinary actions up to and including termination, to ensure maximum

utilization of individual and group capabilities. Ensures that assigned employees receive

opportunities to further their knowledge.
