Sterile Processing Tech (Certified)-Surgery and Rehab Hospital -PRN

Day Shift

General Summary:
Under the supervision and/or direction of the Manager of Sterile Processing or designee, processes (from decontamination to terminal sterilization) and distributes all reusable supplies and equipment throughout the hospital.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Technical Excellence:

5. Completes hospital-required reviews, e.g. HIPAA, safety, health screening,
care concerns, and others as assigned.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Classified as heavy work by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles: Will exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects.
- Stands constantly on tile or linoleum floor.
- Walks occasionally throughout the entire surgical and sterile processing departments.
- Sits occasionally on a hard or cushioned chair.
- Lifts up to 25 pounds laterally to and from waist level on constant basis.
- Carries up to 25 pounds frequently for distances of up to 100 feet.
- Pushes/pulls up to 150 pounds occasionally during each shift in order to move/transport supplies and equipment.
- Frequently bends and occasionally squats from an upright position to lower levels.
- Constantly reaches from side to side.
- Twists from the waist on a frequent basis.
- Ability to occasionally operate hand/arm controls in order to manipulate instruments and equipment.
- Ability to move rapidly in order to perform duties while preventing downtime (particularly during emergencies which may occur occasionally during tour of duty).
- Manual dexterity and flexibility adequate for cleaning, processing, and sterilizing instruments (according to CDC, OSHA, and hospital policies and procedures); manipulating, programming, and packing autoclaves and sterilizers; setting up and processing specified trays; picking linen and instruments for upcoming cases; and maintaining aseptic technique.
- Near- visual acuity necessary for deciphering fine print, viewing computer screen, and distinguishing sizes and shapes.
- Auditory acuity adequate for hearing normal voice tones when not facing the individual and/or when muffled through face mask, telephone conversations, equipment alarms, intercom, overhead pages, fire alarms, etc.
- Ability to constantly anticipate and respond to changes in surgical schedule/procedures and establish priorities accordingly.
Possesses good general mental health; ability to work under pressure while relating to hospital staff; ability to speak, read, and write the english language; verbal ability for communicating constantly and effectively with team members. Ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology; simple arithmetic skills necessary in order to properly prepare instrument trays.

Qualifications:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Must annually complete 10 hours of continuing education.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Experience within the past two (2) years in instrument processing required. Computer literacy preferred.

Certifications/Licensure: Certification by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) is required.
