Sterile Supply Assistant Job Description

Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Byron Center: 6820 Edgeview Ave SW, Byron Center, MI 49315

Reports To: Specialty Departments (Ophthalmology, Surgery, Internal Medicine), ER Shift Lead, Hospital Leadership (HD/MD)

Role Type: Full Time, Part Time
This position will start with 3 days a week and will later increase to 4 days per week. 
 

Summary of Job Purpose and Function

The Sterile Supply Assistant supports the Veterinary Team in ensuring quality veterinary care for all patients by maintaining and sterilizing surgical and procedural equipment, maintaining surgical and procedural inventory, preserving the cleanliness and efficiency of the sterile hospital environment, and ensuring a safe and efficient hospital environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

·  Surgical Packs and Sterilization

· Clean surgical instruments

· Clean endoscopic instruments

· Properly wrap surgical and endoscopic instruments and materials

· Sterilize surgical and endoscopic instruments (steam and ethylene oxide sterilization)

· Surgical equipment care and maintenance

· Maintain organization of surgical inventory

Surgery

· Prepare the OR for surgery; select appropriate packs, instruments, and materials for the procedure being performed

· Assist with providing surgical equipment during surgery

· Assist with cleaning of the ORs following procedures

Communication

· Communicate clearly regarding daily surgery plans, scheduling and cleaning needs throughout the course of the workday

· Maintain open and clear communications with members of the patient care team regarding equipment needs, and status of the operating room to ensure daily needs are met

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must have a valid high school diploma or GED.

· Must have experience working in a sterilization area, human or veterinary.

· Knowledge of general surgical procedures and protocols.

· Scientific background with an understanding of microbiology is preferred.

· Excellent communication skills. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

· Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.

· Ability to act as a team player, adhering to all core values of the hospital.

Employees are required to: sit, stand, walk, talk, see, and hear. Employee is occasionally bending/stooping, climbing, reaching above shoulder, kneeling, balance and lift/push/pull up to 40 pounds.
