What you will be doing

The Strategic Sourcing Manager, Own Brands position will be based in Pleasanton, CA, Boise, ID, or one of our main regional offices (Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Denver, CO, Dallas, TX, Chicago, IL, Fullerton, CA, or Phoenix, AZ).

Main responsibilities

Lead the sourcing efforts of categories that are up to an annual spend of $300M+ that are of hard complexity, utilizing the various standard sourcing processes adopted by the Strategic Sourcing Department Provided thought leadership and subject matter expertise to execute sourcing initiatives in support of the Own Brands business priorities Formulate and execute sourcing plans for seafood and/or meat categories, aligning with the overall business objective Lead and conduct negotiations with suppliers to secure the best possible pricing, terms, and conditions while ensuring compliance with industry standards Conduct market research and analysis to stay informed of trends, pricing and supply chain dynamics in the seafood and/or meat industry  Monitor market trends, price fluctuations, and industry news to identify potential risks and opportunities in the seafood and/or meat market Analyze cost structures and seek opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies of seafood and/or meat commodities Develop and maintain strong relationships with seafood and/or meat suppliers, evaluating their quality, reliability, and pricing to ensure optimal sourcing Direct and primary contact with stakeholders (Business Units) and suppliers on various categories/projects. Closely partner with stakeholders to implement sourcing strategies to ensure supply while balancing cost and quality Lead Own Brands new item/innovation sourcing for multiple categories Develop and negotiate contract terms including executing and implementing contracts. Interface with Safeway’s Legal Counsel as needed to obtain approval on legal terms Gather bid data, analyze complex bid submissions and make advanced financial scenario modeling to showcase award recommendations to sourcing management and business units Facilitate cross functional meetings to ensure sourcing projects stay on timeline and communicate to upper management on challenges, risks, and obstacles Summarize financials and present recommendations to business unit and senior management Mitigate company financial liabilities through inventory management with suppliers Manage cost increase process and negotiations for the assigned categories including analysis, negotiations, and communication to stakeholders Conduct supply assurance projects to onboard secondary suppliers to help improve category service level Conduct Industry analysis and identify industry trends Identify and execute cost savings initiatives that support the department’s overall savings goal, deliver improved quality, cost, service, and innovation Deliver accurate financial reporting of cost savings to leadership Lead supplier transitions when required by monitoring liabilities, enabling supplier set-up and ensuring documentation is accurate and complete Manage supplier relationships with primary responsibility for bringing resolution on day-to-day issues related to pricing, product availability, and ongoing projects Adhere to the Sourcing departments SOX policies and procedures

Leadership and Management

Motivate the sourcing team to support and utilize the Strategic Sourcing processes and tools required to meet their job requirements and goals Train and mentor analysts on building their skills to become strategic sourcing experts this includes understanding the industry, negotiations, contracts and developing complex financial models    Develop product knowledge and understanding of category roles and business strategy in the group

The salary range is $105,900.00 to $137,580.00 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates.

What we are searching for 

Bachelor’s degree in Business/Logistics preferred 6-8 years’ experience in retail seafood and/or meat sourcing and procurement 6-8 years of negotiating contracts, managing strategic supplier alliances and buying experience.  Understanding of meat and poultry industry specifications, production systems, quality grades and animal raising processes or understanding of different seafood species, their sourcing regions, quality standards, and market dynamics Demonstrated experience driving sustainability and traceability initiatives within the sourcing process Familiarity with USDA/FDA standards, perishability, and packaging a plus  Strong ability to negotiate internally and externally to achieve required objectives and executes and implement contracts Strong ability to influence internal and external stakeholders Strong meeting management and facilitation skills Good understanding of manufacturing, distribution and logistics Exceptional complex analytical and problem-solving skills Good knowledge of sourcing systems and preferable e-sourcing technology Advanced computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. Ability to understand and work with multiple enterprise-wide systems Working knowledge of contract law, government policies and regulations for the food and drug industry. Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills Excellent relationship building and collaboration skills High energy level, initiative, creative problem-solving ability and sense of urgency Excellent team interpersonal skills and ability to handle multiple tasks while providing superior service Ability to work with cross-functional teams Ability to lead and/or mentor coach team
