**Description:** **BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT** **Street Light Repair Worker** **Department of Transportation** **Number of Positions: 1** **These positions are open to the general public and all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with** **I.B.E.W. – LOCAL 9 (BARGAINING UNIT 29)** **IF YOU ARE A CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEE AND WANT TO EXERCISE YOUR CONTRACTUAL RIGHTS TO BID, YOU** **MUST** **APPLY ON THE BID ONLY SITEAT:** **www.cityofchicago.org/CAREERS** **(Once the website opens, scroll down, and click on the button titled “Bid Opportunities.”)** **IN ADDITION, YOU MUST CHECK THE BOX ON THE CAREERS APPLICATION TITLED "ALREADY EMPLOYED BY THIS COMPANY", CORRECTLY ENTER YOUR EMPLOYEE ID, AND SELECT THE CORRECT BARGAINING UNIT.** **YOU MUST USE THE EMPLOYEE NUMBER FOUND ON THE UPPER LEFT-HAND CORNER OF YOUR PAYCHECK STUB LABELED “PAYEE/EMPLOYEE NUMBER.”** **(NO OTHER FORMAT OR SYSTEM CAN BE USED TO OBTAIN YOUR EMPLOYEE NUMBER).** **FAILURE TO CHECK THE "ALREADY EMPLOYED BY THIS COMPANY" BOX, ENTER YOUR EMPLOYEE ID, AND SELECT THE CORRECT BARGAINING UNIT WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION.** Under supervision, performs aerial and underground electrical installations and repairs for street lighting circuits, and performs related duties as required. **ESSENTIAL DUTIES** **:** + Examines wiring diagrams, circuit blueprints, and cable prints of public streetlights to determine existing electrical configurations + Locates and identifies defects in cables and wires using electrical measuring equipment (e.g., battery test circuit, amp meters) + Determine necessary repairs and prepare estimates for needed materials and equipment. + Adjusts and replaces timing devices and energized timing circuits. + Removes and replaces damaged electrical wires, light poles, polearms, and ornamental fixtures. + Installs new parts to replace malfunctioning equipment (e.g., bulbs, fuses, relays, photo eyes) + Installs and repairs alley lights. + Prepare work activity reports. + Operates an aerial boom from a line truck/van to reach aerial wires, as required. + Prepare work activity reports electronically on a tablet/ iPad or paper. **_NOTE:_** _The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive; there may be other duties that are essential to particular positions within the class._ **Location:** Varies **Days:** **Varies** **Hours:** **Varies** **THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE** **Qualifications:** **QUALIFICATIONS:** + Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience + A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required. **Working Conditions** **:** + Exposure to outdoor weather conditions + Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., traffic) + Work performed in cramped or confined locations. + Work performed above or below ground level. + Work performed using scaffolds and ladders. + Work performed at great heights with the use of safety belts. **SELECTION REQUIREMENT** **:** **This position requires candidates to pass a job knowledge/skills assessment.** Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after the test results have been compiled and analyzed.
