What Is The Opportunity?

Alberta Transportation has awarded Aecon with a $595 million contract for the Deerfoot Trail Improvements project, located in Calgary, Alberta. Construction will consist of seven new bridges, additional lanes, and improvements to ramps and interchanges. Construction is scheduled for completion by fall of 2027.

 

Reporting to the Quality Control/Lab Manager, the Materials Testing Student will have the opportunity to take an active involvement in the Deerfoot project located in Calgary, Alberta. This is an 8 or 12 month co-op placement starting May 2025.


Key Responsibilities

Performing material testing on a variety of different construction materials, including but not limited to asphalt and aggregates. Performs site inspections and field testing for sampling/compaction and/or construction inspections. Maintain daily checklists and quality control reports. Assists in equipment management / control / maintenance / certification. Ensures that environment is in compliance with Aecon Health & Safety and Environmental Manual. Reviews / tracks / summarizes Quality Assurance non-conformances and ensures appropriate follow-up. Ensures the safe / organized status of materials and equipment in laboratory and field areas.

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

Currently enrolled in a technical college diploma in Civil Engineering or Construction Management. Experience in the construction industry is a strong asset. A valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract. Experience in the lab and field testing of construction materials is an asset. Excellent Microsoft Outlook, MS Word and Excel skills. Proven people and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals. Excellent communications skills. Proven ability to utilize current technologies. Strong problem-solving skills. Adaptable to flexible work schedules (day and night shifts) when required to meet deadlines. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
