Position Summary:

The candidate will advise Bachelor of Commerce students on course and program selection and information regarding student affairs activities (e.g. transfers, academic credit and standing, etc.). This position will also be responsible for evaluating academic transcripts to determine acceptability, transfer credit, and academic standing; ensure accuracy of student records in assessing individual circumstances and adjust program and/or course requirements. The incumbent will provide guidance to students on Student Affairs policies and procedures related to University and student life.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide training to support staff and junior advisers on Student Affairs practicesParticipate in review and updating of criteria for faculty policies and proceduresSelect and recommend candidates for graduation, special certification, in-course awards and special designation at graduationAct as liaison between faculty and students on program or course related issuesAdvise professors when issues regarding student’s personal or academic problems ariseConduct surveys on student affairs issues and present workshops designed to assist studentsProvide individual and group advising to students on academic issues. Plan and develop preventive outreach programs Develop contacts with student organizations and co-ordinate orientation and recruiting events across campusMaintain regular contacts with outside institutionsParticipate in committees at the University levelInternational promotion  and administration of privatized  International Summer ProgramPlan sessions for incoming and outgoing exchange studentsMaintain and promote current relationships with International exchange partnersInitiate and develop new exchange partnershipsReview, analyze, and make decisions on admission eligibility of exchange applicants and International Summer Program applicantsRepresent McGill and Desautels at International conferences

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Advising and student affairs experience. Ability to listen and provide students with appropriate guidance or referrals. Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and diplomatically in delicate situations. Proven knowledge of the functions of the Desautels Faculty of Management and/or the University. Attention to detail. Strong organizational skills with an ability to meet multiple deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work in a MS Office environment and have experience using Banner SIS. English, spoken and written. French, spoken.
