Posting Details Position Information Job Title Student Assistant (Academia Translator/Interpreter) (Grant-Funded) General Description Grant-funded position
This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function (implementation of the RAICES grant from the U.S. Department of Education). Job Duties 1. Assists with implementation of a professional development grant, to include dissemination of grant-related information in English and Spanish.
2. Provides verbal and written translation for presenters who are working with Spanish-speaking community members (children ages 3-11 and their parents).
3. Participates in four bilingual community programs regarding cultural competence and increasing community engagement.
4. Utilizes research-based strategies and tactics to engage with community members and community partners in English and Spanish.
5. Maintains confidentiality of program participants.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability and desire to be in the company of children and parents.
2. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
3. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
4. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
5. Ability to translate at the native/near native level in both English and Spanish. Required Qualifications The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided. Preferred Qualifications Coursework in translation and interpretation is preferred. Physical Demands Special Conditions for Eligibility A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
