Job Summary:

This position is a great opportunity for anyone considering a career in teaching and/or the education profession.  To be considered for this federally funded tutoring position, you must file the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible to receive financial aid at LCC.  Work-Study funding is only awarded to eligible students; this money is used to pay their wages while employed.  Unfortunately, applicants who are neither eligible nor able to be awarded Federal Work-Study will be considered for hire.  This position requirement is non-negotiable.

NOTE: job site is located off-campus at The Reading People (Capital Area Literacy Coalition - CALC), www.thereadingpeople.org.  CALC's main office is conveniently located less than 1.0 mile from LCC's downtown campus at: 1028 E. Saginaw Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.

There are a variety of needs at The Reading People.  Most tutors help in the areas of adult basic reading, GED preparation, and ESL/EFL (English as a Second Language, English as a Foreign Language).  Others work as part of the in-school children's programs.  In addition to tutoring, other volunteer opportunities include helping in the office, organizing donated books, running errands and more.

Basic Reading Tutor Training (BRTT) is provided on-site; tutors are paid for all training sessions they attend and complete.  Sessions are held at the CALC main office during normal business hours.  However, there is an option to complete training during an afterhours time slot (i.e. between 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on a weeknight).  No prior experience is necessary.  CALC provides ongoing tutor support and instructional materials throughout the assignment. A resource manual is also provided to tutors during training.

Student applicants are encouraged to follow up with the Department Contact listed above regarding the status of their submitted application. Student positions are filled each semester on a need-to-hire basis. Applicants are reviewed whenever the department has an immediate need to fill a vacancy; the review of applications typically ends once all available positions are filled.

Regular on campus presence is expected for all LCC employment. Any flexible work schedules and/or hybrid work schedules approved by the College are subject to change based on the needs of the LCC community.

Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check as part of the employment process.
