LUMCON, a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.
LUMCON has provided unparalleled opportunities in marine science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana’s dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON expanded its programs through the opening of Blue Works, a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.
The Benthic Ecology Lab (Archerbenthicecologylab.com) at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking multiple student interns to start immediately. The successful applicant(s) will gain research experience in the fields of benthic biodiversity sampling and assessment and/or environmental chemistry. The student(s) will primarily work on either a project to link oyster biodiversity with aspects of oyster reef soundscapes or a project aimed at assessing the capacity for Freshwater Sponges to act as passive samplers for heavy metals, although the student will assist with all projects occurring in the lab. The internship(s) will involve a combination of field, lab, and computer-based work. Students will be expected to work between 8-16 hours a week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a Louisiana institution.
+ Detail oriented.
+ Comfortable working in and around the water.
+ Competent with computers.
+ Competent in a lab environment.
IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Works well both as part of a team and independently.
+ Ability to distinguish sounds originating from different sources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
+ Use provided software (RavenPro) to manually annotate sound recordings.
+ Assist with field work on oyster reefs.
+ Assist with data entry.
+ Assist with quality assurance for data.
+ Assist other lab personnel in processing samples in the laboratory.
+ Learn to identify fauna associated with oyster reefs.
+ Participate in lab meetings.

This is an unclassified position.
This position is located in Chauvin, (Cocodrie), LA.
