Job Title Student Intern Agency Texas A&M Forest Service Department Region 2 Proposed Minimum Salary $17.00 hourly Job Location Mineral Wells, Texas Job Type Student Worker Job Description This position is a seasonal Student Intern position assigned to Lubbock, TX that will begin June 2, 2025 and last for 10 weeks, Monday - Friday 8AM-5PM. Housing will not be provided. The Student Intern position will be working under the Field Operations Department and will work closely with Task Force Coordinators, Wildland Urban Interface Coordinators, Regional Fire Coordinators, Foresters and Woodland Ecologists. The intern will be exposed to many aspects of the agency. Responsibilities: -Gain familiarization in both fire and natural resource management programs. -Engage in supporting fire prevention and mitigation programs, which include development of Community Wildfire Protection Plans and Firewise Communities, hazardous fuel projects (including prescribed fire and forest mulching) and wildland fire training if available. -Provide GIS mapping and data support, assist in Stewardship plan writing, Oak Wilt surveys and assist with landowner workshops. -Assist in promoting the benefits of prescribed fire and mechanical fuel reduction projects. -Provide support for fire department capacity building programs and wildfire response. -Assist other programs and branches with delivery. -Other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: 50% office work, 50% field work/traveling. Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. However, there may be early starts and late evenings for meetings or occasional travel. This is a mixed office type environment with field work and occasional travel. May require exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sun, rain and temperature extremes. -May require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, reaching, bending and kneeling. -May require lifting and carrying heavy objects. -May require driving motor vehicles on and off road for long distances. -May require operating heavy equipment with related exposure to equipment vibration and noise -May require operating computers with monitors for extended periods of time. -May require infrequent travel in State vehicles with overnight stays. -May require extended communication with the general public and employees in person, by phone or electronically. -Emergency response may result in exposure to emotionally stressful situations for extended periods of time. -Must meet moderate physical fitness standard of a 2-mile walk carrying 25lb pack in 30 minutes or less to be allowed on the fireline. Education and Experience: Required Education: Must be currently enrolled at an accredited college/university that have completed their junior year of college up to second-year post-graduates (masters/Ph. D students), in a course of study relevant to the mission of the agency: Natural Resource Management, Range Science, Forestry, Emergency Management or closely related field. Preferred Education: Preference given to students with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Required Experience: None Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Required Knowledge: PC-based programs and software Required Skills: Good oral and written communication skills. Required Abilities: Multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Abilities: Ability to utilize GIS/GPS programs.
