This role performs various routine support functions as listed below. Functions may vary based upon the unit assigned.
Assists the registered nurse assigned to the patient with the assessment of the patient by monitoring parameters outlined by the registered nurse in accordance with the Nursing Standards of Practice.Assists the registered nurse assigned to the patient in planning of nursing care by providing input to the nurse related to the observed effects of previous treatments or nursing care.Assists the registered nurse assigned to the patient with the implementation of nursing care by performing nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by the registered nurse such as:Assists with nasogastric irrigations and nasogastric or gastrostomy feedings.Assists with indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterization and performs catheter care and removal.Performs procedures or skills that are routinely done on the specific unit such as dressing changes, calculating intake and output and shift totals.Provides direct patient care, such as personal hygiene care, positioning, ambulating, transporting, nutritional intake/feeding and bed making.Assists with patient admission and discharge and setting up special equipment.Assists with device care: braces (Miami J collar, splints, Bledsoe, TCO, Yale), compression wraps/stockings, etcAssists the registered nurse assigned to the patient in the evaluation of nursing care by reporting patient response to nursing actions such as pain management, vital signs and elimination.Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures. Documents appropriate information such as vital signs, intake and output in accordance with the Nursing Documentation Policy.Performs CPR as needed.Follows institutional infection control guidelines.Follows/implements established institutional/unit policies and procedures to ensure patient safety.Performs general support services to the unit and patient which may include unit errands, procuring equipment and taking and relaying messages.Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors and other members of the healthcare team demonstrating positive guest relations and treating patient information confidentially.Performs related duties as required.Company Description

Currently enrolled and in good academic standing for junior or senior year of a BSN, or an Associate Degree Program. Has successfully completed their Fundamentals Course and 1 Clinical Rotation Current AHA Health Care Provider (CPR) card.Working Conditions Works inside, in a clean well-lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, such as chemicals and cleaning agents, requiring the observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. May be physically and verbally abused by patients. Works a regular assigned shift but may be expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to work on other than regular unit of hire to provide adequate staffing, if the need arises. Participates in temporary assignment measures. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.
Physical Requirements Requires bending/stooping/crouching/kneeling approximately 50% of the time in the delivery of patient evaluation and treatment. Requires reaching/grasping/handling of small equipment and paperwork weighing up to 20 lb. approximately 70% of the time in the delivery of patient care and performance of clerical duties. Requires standing and walking approximately 80% of the time; with occasional stair climbing. Requires lifting and positioning patients, weighing in excess of 100 lbs., with the assistance of others or ergonomic equipment and utilizing proper body mechanics approximately 50% of the time, in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Requires pushing/pulling equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. approximately 20% of the time, requires carrying supplies/equipment weighing up to 20 lbs. approximately 50% of the time. Requires substantial movements/motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers as in performing treatment procedures approximately 50% of the time. Requires good visual acuity to read patient records and equipment monitors; requires adequate ability to receive detailed information conveyed through oral communication in the process of evaluating and treating patients accurately, clearly, quickly approximately 80% of the time.
