Student Nurse Intern - Critical Care Unit/Intensiv
POSITION PURPOSE Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), provides safe, personal patient care. Performs procedures that are documented on individual Student Nurse Intern Skills List. MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED High School plus specialized training (6 mons-2 yrs) MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Entry Level LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED Current BLS and/or CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or the ability to obtain certification within 6 weeks of hire. Must currently be enrolled in nursing program. If not currently enrolled in nursing program, this position may be used for those that have graduated from such a program and do not hold a temporary permit or have been unsuccessful on the nursing licensure exam and is retaking the exam. In this case, the SNI position will only be available up to six (6) months from the date of graduation from nursing program. 3.00 GPA is preferred. Minimum of one semester of formal nursing education that includes at least one semester of clinical experience and/or C.N.A. certification and currently enrolled in a clinical semester. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED The ability to read, write, speak, hear and comprehend the English language. The physical, technical and cognitive ability, as well as the manual dexterity, to use patient care equipment. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Under the direction of the RN, provides personal care to patients in a safe and efficient manner, such as: bathing, oral hygiene, elimination needs and feeding. Promptly and courteously responds to any patient call lights. Takes appropriate action including precautionary measures whenever possible to avert emergencies. Under the direction of the RN, assists in admitting patients by orienting them to the hospital routine in a sincere and helpful manner. Transfers, discharges and escorts patients courteously and safely. Communication is perceived to be clear, concise and relevant. Under the direction of the RN, safely and effectively performs selected patient care procedures (i.e. turning, positioning, ambulating, range of motion and application of restraints) as well as procedures listed in the Student Nurse Intern competency document. Accurately collects and records measurements, vital signs and specimens (i.e. blood pressure, temperature, weight, intake and output). Documentation of procedures is accurate, timely and legible. Actively contributes to the development of the plan of care. Contributions reflect knowledge of care appropriate for the individual patient's needs. Promptly and clearly communicates to the RN pertinent information such as changes in patient condition and questions about patient care. Demonstrates good judgment and the ability to focus on relevant patient problems. Recognizes the occurrence of life-threatening situations and emergencies and takes the appropriate actions in a timely manner. Assesses emergency situations and assumes appropriate functions calmly, safely and responsibly. Emergencies include, but are not limited to: fire, tornado, disaster, cardiopulmonary arrest; or sudden physiological developments, physical injury situations, psychiatric crisis, adverse treatment reactions and suicide attempts. Patient rooms and areas are neat and well maintained. Takes personal responsibility to clean, maintain and store equipment. Comprehensive knowledge and proficient skill in the assessment, planning, implementation and/or evaluation of care for the pediatric (neonates, children, adolescents) through geriatric patient: Displays appropriate knowledge of the growth and development of the pediatric patient and demonstrates proper skills in providing care; Monitors the pediatric through geriatric patients' physical and emotional condition before, during and after procedures, providing explanations, reassurances and comfort appropriate for patients' growth and development levels; Demonstrates a sensitivity to the special family needs of the pediatric through geriatric patient; and Displays knowledge of and utilizes correct procedures when operating equipment during a procedure for the pediatric through geriatric patient.
