Student Respiratory Care Assistant

The Respiratory Care Assistant role is designed for first-year respiratory therapy students to gain exposure to an inpatient setting, with a flexible work schedule that is set around classes. Shifts are 4 hours, 4 days per week and can be during day shift or evening shift.

Purpose: Guided by a respiratory therapist and adhering to regional guidelines, the student respiratory care assistant supports the respiratory department by managing equipment orders, inventory, and distribution, including medical gases. This role involves assisting clinical staff with various tasks, maintaining equipment levels in work areas, and handling the assembly, transport, disinfection, calibration, and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment.

Responsibilities:

Service Excellence: Actively engage with patients, families, physicians, and staff to address their needs. Oxygen Supply Management: Ensure a steady supply of transport oxygen and cylinders across all units and areas. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and cleaning of respiratory care equipment, including disinfection and calibration. Infection Control: Transport and handle dirty equipment using proper infection control methods and personal protective equipment. Equipment Inspection: Check and maintain respiratory equipment, ensuring correct assembly and function, and report any malfunctions. Support Tasks: Assist respiratory therapists with equipment tracking, bronchoscope procedures, intubations, extubations, and sleep studies. Technical Proficiency: Maintain skills in Microsoft Office, electronic health records, and ordering systems.
