Position Summary The Student Success and Retention Specialist for the School of Nursing (SON) will support nursing students (specifically pre and post licensure students) by providing targeted academic coaching, mentoring, and retention strategies to promote their success. Collaborating closely with program leadership and the Office of Student Success, this individual will identify students at risk, develop individualized success plans, and connect students to academic and support resources. The specialist will monitor student progress, facilitate/coordinate workshops on study skills, time management, and foster a supportive learning environment to enhance retention and program completion rates. This role is critical in ensuring pre- and post-licensure students are well-prepared to achieve their academic and professional goals. The Student Success and Retention Specialist also collaborates with the UNCG Division of Student Success. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in nursing, counseling, education, psychology or related field. Previous experience in counseling, academic coaching, tutoring, or student support services. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and technology skills. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in nursing, counseling, education, psychology or related field. At least one year of work experience with nursing or health-related student success activities. Knowledge of nursing curriculum and student academic success and retention strategies. Percentage Of Time 50% Key Responsibility Student Retention and Success Strategies Essential Tasks Develop and implement strategies to support student retention and success within the pre/post-licensure nursing programs. Monitor academic progress and identify students at risk of academic difficulty through regular check-ins and data analysis. Provide individualized support plans that include targeted academic coaching, mentoring, and resource referrals. Assist students with study skills, time management, test-taking strategies, and NCLEX preparation to ensure academic and professional success. Percentage Of Time 15% Key Responsibility Student Resource Navigation and Advocacy Essential Tasks Connect students to university resources such as tutoring, counseling services, mental health support, and financial aid to address personal and academic challenges. Serve as a mentor and advocate for pre-licensure nursing students, promoting equity, inclusion, and a supportive learning environment. Assist with orientation programming to help students transition into the program successfully. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Collaboration with Faculty and Program Leadership Essential Tasks Collaborate with faculty to identify early warning signs of struggling students and address barriers to academic progression. Work closely with program leadership, including the Directors of Pre-licensure BSN & MSN Programs, to align retention efforts with program goals. Act as a liaison between students and faculty to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to student support. Percentage Of Time 15% Key Responsibility Conduct academic and life skills coaching for prelicensure students, in particular. Essential Tasks Make contact with all students at the beginning of the academic year to introduce services (e.g., via orientation, email , class visits etc.). Meet as requested one-on-one or in student groups for academic and life coaching appointments. Coordinate student-to-student support groups. Create and provide programs as needed for identified student issues. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Workshops, Programming, and Reporting Essential Tasks Develop and deliver workshops or group sessions on academic success strategies, stress management, personal resilience, and more. Track and analyze student performance and retention data to identify trends and inform program improvements.
