Job Description
The Student Technician I provides general logistical support to assist with the organizational needs of the division. Responsibilities of this position include basic maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspection, testing, and repair of emergency response training equipment and course supplies. Prepare domestic shipments of course equipment. Maintain inventory of instructional material and maintenance/repair components. Safely handle hazardous material used in course deliveries as training aids.
Learning Outcomes:
The student will learn to work as a member of a team and develop creative solutions to complex problems. Through supporting course logistics, the student will also gain familiarity with the National Response Framework and how disaster response in the United States.
This position reports to the Facilities Coordinator II.
Required Qualifications:
+ High School Diploma or GED and current enrollment in an undergraduate degree-granting program at an accredited college or university.
+ One year of related work experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
+ Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Warehouse or maintenance experience.
Physical Requirements:
+ Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
+ Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions year-round, potential allergens, and elevated noise levels.
+ Physical conditioning consistent with movement / lifting up to 45 lbs. of containers and equipment using assisted-lift equipment, standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting, reaching, talking, hearing, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Must be mechanically inclined.
+ Knowledge of basic hand tools and hand power tools.
+ Must be able to safely operate forklift and other organizational vehicles.
+ Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet applications, and presentation software applications, such as Microsoft Office programs.
+ Excellent interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills.
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
+ Ability to actively demonstrate the TEEX Values – Safety, Teamwork, Adaptability, Respect, and Stewardship.
Equipment:
+ Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.
+ Heavy equipment operation: Forklift, pallet jack and hand truck.
+ Hand and power tools such as drills, saws, and grinders.
+ Occasional use of agency vehicles.
Notifications:
+ This position is security sensitive.
+ This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
+ This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
+ All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
+ Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle.
Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:
Domestic/International Shipment Preparation - 45%
+ Adheres to safety policies while following equipment packing guidelines for individual equipment cases as well as shipping containers.
+ Utilizes a checklist to ensure proper quantities of training equipment are packed for each course delivery.
+ Updates shipping calendar – online and white board.
+ Meets suspense/timelines for pack outs, and submission of reports, timesheets, vouchers, and receipts.
Course Equipment and Supply and Building Maintenance - 45%
+ Utilizes course equipment reports from instructor staff to determine repair or replacement needs for course equipment sets.
+ Utilizes hand tools to repair shipping containers or course equipment.
+ Ensures that buildings and property are secured when unattended.
+ Takes all appropriate measures to prevent loss, theft, or damage to any TEEX property.
+ Immediately reports any loss, theft, or damage to TEEX property to any supervisor.
+ Provides and maintains work schedule based upon school schedule.
Course Material Inventory - 10%
+ Utilizes inventory control spreadsheet to track quantities of course material.
+ Reports to supervisor when inventory must be replenished.
+ Ensures obsolete or damaged material are not included with course equipment.
+ Occasionally picks up materials and supplies from local vendors.
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
+ Performs additional work duties as assigned.
