Student Trainee (Environmental)
Summary This position is part of the Environmental Compliance Transmission (ECT), Environmental Planning & Analysis organization (EC), Environment, Fish and Wildlife, Bonneville Power Administration. As a Student Trainee (Environmental), you will serve as a trainee Environmental Protection Specialist, responsible for performing assignments of limited scope and difficulty which are screened to eliminate difficult or unusual problems. Responsibilities As a Student Trainee (Environmental), you will: Participates with higher-graded employees and other inter and intra organization team members to conduct routine analyses of data and field work to enable higher graded employees and managers to understand project issues and ensure timely compliance with NEPA. Participates with higher-graded employees in environmental related technical analyses. Research routine environmental issues for specific project/policy circumstances. Assists higher graded specialists in applying BPA policies and procedures to a variety of routine project and situations. Acquires data and performs analyses and calculations. Provides routine technical information to higher graded specialists. Requirements Conditions of Employment This employer participates in the e-Verify program. Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check. May be required to successfully complete a probationary period. Valid State Driver's License is required. Field work may be necessary in inclement weather and in a wide range of temperatures. Work may require travel via car, airplane, 4WD, or helicopter to work locations and occasional overnight travel to remote parts of the service area. Field work locations may be in close proximity to high voltage transmission lines and substations. Work may be outdoors in inclement weather on steep and or muddy terrain. As a Pathways intern you will be expected to work during your summer, winter and spring breaks unless otherwise coordinated with your manager. PATHWAYS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Must be in good academic standing. Must be at least 16 years of age or older. Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. This employer participates in the e-Verify program. Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment. A Pathways Internship Participant Agreement is required. Conversion: Pathways Interns may be converted to a term or permanent position upon program completion. This is not automatic nor guaranteed; it is at the discretion of the employing office. To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement. Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENT: Currently enrolled in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. GS-04: To qualify, you must have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study OR an associate's degree. GS-05: To qualify, you must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree OR a bachelor's degree. GS-07: To qualify, you must have completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. Note: 1 full academic year is equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Preferred not required: Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses and a variety of geospatial environments and using a variety of geoprocessing tools. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Education Education Requirements: Your educational goals must include obtaining a professional degree that will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. You must submit a copy of your current transcripts with major being pursued for proof of education and enrollment. If you are not currently enrolled but have been accepted for future enrollment you must submit a copy of your acceptance letter with your application.
