Studio Educator - Cyert Center for Early Education

The Cyert Center was founded in 1971 by working parents at Carnegie Mellon University, for working parents. The Cyert Center now serves 290 children in two locations. The Cyert Center is a community committed to the highest quality care and education for children ages infant through kindergarten. We believe that all children are thinkers, researchers, and problem solvers. Our program revolves around valuing the development of relationships, open dialogue, and collaboration, which we believe supports the development of strong relationships between all members of the community—children, parents, educators and the communities beyond these walls. Hallmarks of our philosophy include negotiated curriculum, social constructivism, and the rich use of materials for self-expression and exploration.

The Studio Educator will demonstrate a dedication to early childhood education and love of learning; passion for using a broad range of materials with children; ability to collaborate with the leadership team members and early childhood educators and accept feedback; a strong understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach; visibility of professional commitment; respect for children and families and ability to show authenticity in all relationships; high energy level; an intentional approach towards supporting the learning of children, the growth of educators and the development of pedagogical philosophy; ability to be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic; effective interpersonal skills necessary to work with young children, parents/guardians, other staff, and the campus community.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
-  Child Education and Care - Educates and cares for young children, fostering their individual growth and development, and demonstrates consistent responsiveness to children through the continual evaluation and relevant adaptation of the classroom and shared space environments.

-  Program Development and Curriculum Delivery - Constructs learning opportunities that consider the developmental levels of the children through a steady commitment to and active participation in journaling, collaborative planning, and the construction of varied experiences based on observation and collaborative interpretation.

-  Team Building and Collaboration - Creates systems to support the work of children and colleagues, modifying the organization of the day to be optimal, meeting basic needs thoughtfully, and designing systems for communication within and outside of the classroom.

-  Compliance and Safety - Adheres to The Department of Human Services licensing regulations and The National Association for the Education of Young Children’s accreditation standards.

-  Family Engagement - Exhibits a high level of commitment to parents, offering regular, ongoing communication with parents about children’s experiences, development, and learning, through conversations, documentation, events, and parent meetings.

-  Professional Development - Commits to best practices and continued professional development and growth, earning twenty-four (24) hours of required professional development annually.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 
Education/Training/Experience: 

-  A bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, AND 1-2 years professional experience with traditional and/or non-traditional materials work with young children, OR

-  A bachelor’s degree in Art Education or Visual or Performing Arts, AND 1-2 years experience working with children ages birth to five, OR

-  Psychology or related field, AND 1-2 years experience working with children ages birth to five AND 1-2 years professional experience with traditional and/or non-traditional materials work with young children, OR

-  A bachelor’s degree, including 30 credit hours in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or related field and 1 year of experience with children AND 1-2 years professional experience with traditional and/or non-traditional materials work with young children.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/MOBILITY:
-  Full range of body motion needed and change positions/ have the mobility to interact with young children

-  Must be able to provide supervision and monitor safety through both sight and sound in the classroom and on the playground, without breaks in consciousness

-  Must be able to lift and carry children up to 40 pounds, as well as, move light furniture and play materials, and push a group stroller carrying 4-6 infants and toddlers

-  Must be able to stand for long periods and sit on the floor

-  Must pass a pre-employment physical exam (including TB test) for clearance to meet the physical requirements listed above

-  Successful Background Checks

-  Child Protective Clearances for PA and all states lived in prior five years

-  Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
