Substance Abuse Counselor, Assertive Community Treatment- Columbia, MD (M-F 8:30am-4:30pm)

This is a direct service position requiring knowledge of serious mental illness, substance abuse counseling and specific knowledge and skill in rehabilitation and treatment for persons with co-occurring disorders.  This position requires generalist skills (case management, crisis management, ADLs), as well as specific knowledge of Evidence Based Practice related to substance abuse (SA) treatment for individuals with serious mental illness and harm reduction principles.  This is a salaried position.

Shift: Primarily Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm but requires flexibility and on-call availability to meet client schedules (on-call pay incentive)

Responsibilities:

Provide and/or coordinate the following services for and with assigned clients: assessment, planning, linking, monitoring, advocacy and care both internal to Sheppard Pratt’s programs and through external social service agencies as identified. Serve as consultant for the integrated rehabilitation team regarding substance abuse issues and stage of change/stages of treatment. Provide individuals and group counseling for dually diagnosed individuals. Implement crisis intervention actions as appropriate. Promote effective relationships among clients, families and service providers. Participate on integrated rehabilitation team, in developing and implementing individual plans of clients served. Maintain current, accurate and complete documentation related to all service functions. Initiate communication with supervisor regarding concerns, ideas, input suggestions or problems.

Requirements:

Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Licensed or certified and approved as an alcohol and drug counselor by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists; or licensed, certified or permitted under Health Occupation Article, Annotated Code of Maryland to provide substance abuse treatment (CAC or higher). CSC-AD certification may be considered if candidate can demonstrate ability to obtain CAC-AD certification within 2 years of hire and supervision is available. 2 years positively referenced relevant work. Valid driver’s license and safe driving record. Possession or use of a four passenger car to be used to transport clients and a copy of a valid certificate of automobile insurance. Ability to perform individual substance abuse assessments, planning and implementation of SA recovery plan to assigned individuals. Knowledge of the SA Recovery model and ability to implement recovery based assessment and planning based on stage of recovery client is able/willing to engage in. Ability to foster team approach model by providing consultation and support to peers on the integrated rehabilitation team to insure consistent implementation with individual clients. Ability to communicate Sheppard Pratt’s mission to the community through frequent interactions with neighbors, landlords, business people, and other providers. Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation, best practice substance abuse recovery including harm reduction and motivational interviewing. Ability to establish and maintain empowering trust relationships with clients, families, co-workers, and agencies.
