Job Title: Substation Control Design Engineer
Work Location: Birmingham, AL 35243
Requirements: PPE Requirements: Hardhat, safety glasses, and safety-toed shoes/boots This position requires approximately 25% travel
Required Qualifications:
0-5 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical engineering preferred) or professional engineering license Experience with Design type of work Understanding of how to read design prints Able to compare project drawings to the Company Standard drawings Effective communication skills and able to provide detailed reports Ability to travel throughout the Company footprint to perform project reviews Self-motivated and able to take tasks and complete them with little oversight Basic understanding of Control Design tools and applications (AutoCAD Electrical, TEAMS, Stomps, SCST Vault, Maximo) Understanding the process used for substation control planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance Understanding the functions and activities of various internal departments involved in substation design, construction, and maintenance Knowledge of substation design practices and work processes, using all software applications used in substation design Understanding of NESC and Company design standards
Preferred Qualifications: Familiar with Substation layouts Familiar with Relay Panel assemblies Control Design experience is a plus
Job Duties: This position is responsible for Company Transmission and Distribution Substations design. Perform substation control building and relay panel project reviews throughout Company to measure how standard the projects are from start to finish. This position will require the successful candidate to develop an understanding of the Company Standards and assist with ensuring these standards are being followed from design through to the final product. This includes reviewing the project drawings and comparing them to the Standards drawings to see if there were any deviations, as well as going to the project sites to review the completed product and verifying that the final product matches the Design. The results of these reviews will be put together and shared with the Substation Control Standards Supervisor to report on the effectiveness of standards across the Company. Responsible for providing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects emphasizing safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. Creating a safe work environment by putting safety first Supporting design standard and criteria development for the system Supporting construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations and during emergency restoration of failed equipment Estimating material for transmission projects, transmitting construction packages and supporting specifications.
