HDR Engineering is looking for a Substation Electrical Engineer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Western Canada.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Substation Electrical Engineer, you will be directly responsible for developing and producing detailed engineering deliverables for high-voltage electric utility projects, from 12 kV to 500 kV transmission substations. You will actively design and document all aspects of substation systems for both greenfield and brownfield projects, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and cross-discipline coordination throughout the project lifecycle.Specific duties of the Substation Electrical Engineer include:

Develop engineering deliverables, general arrangements, grounding, raceways, AC/DC systems, protection one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layoutsPerform technical studies, grounding, CT saturation, bus ampacity, lighting, and load flowPrepare equipment specifications and review vendor documentationSupport factory acceptance testing (FAT) and technical evaluationsContribute to scopes, schedules, and budgetsDeliver complete, accurate, and on-time design packagesProactively identify and mitigate design risksWork closely with civil, structural, telecom, and line design teamsParticipate in design reviews and client coordination meetingsCommunicate effectively with project managers, stakeholders, and vendorsMentor junior engineers and designersReview and approve design work for technical accuracySupport procurement, construction, commissioning, and field activitiesContribute to continuous improvement of standards and workflowsPreferred Qualifications A minimum of 5 years of experience in substation design is required. Specific experience performing aspects associated with substation design including one line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding, conduit plans, foundation plans, material lists, relay and control systems control schematics, and wiring diagrams is required.Previous consulting firm experience desired.Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills. Some travel may be required.Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in EngineeringProfessional Engineer (PE) licensePrevious experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.) The pay range for Vancouver is $76,000 - $109,000.
