Job Description

Are you a talented and ambitious university student studying Geotechnical Engineering looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect internship opportunity for you to join OceanaGold, working at our Macraes Mine in Otago.  

This paid internship opportunity will run from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant) and work as part of our talented Geotechnical team, on-site at Macraes. Working a roster of 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off, 7am – 4:30pm daily.

What will you be doing?

Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team membersParticipating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.

Specific project work will involve:

Assisting our team of engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers on a variety of projects including: geotechnical core drilling, borehole geophysics interpretation, monitoring ground movement and groundwater pressures, mapping and modelling geological structure. The geotech team at Macraes has a keen interest in understanding the ground, measuring how it responds to mining and using that information to manage the stability of our highwall, underground tunnels and dams.  A specific project will be defined around the interests and capabilities of the selected candidate.

QualificationsFull Class 1 Drivers licence (ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred)Available across Nov-February 2025/26In your 2nd last or final year of study in Geotechnical Engineering (or similar)Have somewhere to stay in Dunedin, Oamaru and surrounds, and happy to bus to site dailyCurious and inquisitive mindset with a passion for problem solvingStrong communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work both independently and collaborativelyFamiliarity with data analysis tools and visualisation platforms is a plus
