Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Start Date: 07/07/2025End Date: 09/26/2025 (12 Weeks)AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 450 Hour Slot

 

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. Stewards, in partnership with CAPITOL CONSERVATION DISTRICT, are seeking a service member to work collaboratively with regional partners to bring education and outreach to coal impacted communities. The summer outreach fellow will be working with district personnel, Federal and State partners on special projects to learn and assist with areas across the region that have had impact to their natural resources through mining extraction.

 

Activities may include research, physical labor, or community engagement. The selected individual will assist with public outreach and education, as well as host special events.

 

Description of Duties:

·       Learn, assist, and gain hands-on experience by working with partners in coal impacted communities

-       This includes assistance in development remediation, education to the public, and land channeled by rainfall cleanups.

·       Assist the Water Resource Chair in river water cleanups with Coal River and contributories

-       Learn about the impact that the coal industry has on the land around rivers, lakes and streams in the region.

-       Participate in active water resource cleanups and help organize volunteers for additional assistance in designated areas.

·       Public Education and Outreach

-       Assist in educating the community on important resource and conservation topics.

-       Set up and facilitate host sites and events.

-       Participate and aid as needed during workshops and vendor opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienAt least 17 years of ageHas received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education awardAgrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.Strong interest in conservation and natural resourcesBachelor’s degree or certificate in conservation or natural resources preferredSelf-starter with the ability to work independently or collaborativelyVerbal and Written Communication SkillsExperience and skilled in Public SpeakingMicrosoft Office Suite ExperienceExperience in Event Planning is preferred but not requiredWest Virginia Resident with a valid West Virginia license is preferred

 

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve a 35-to-40-hour workday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.Member will receive on-site training from site staff as needed.The site will assist the member through collaborative experiences, building oral and written communication skills, computer programs, planning and coordinating events and outreach, as well as leadership skill development.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
