Summary
This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor p articipation in the retirement system.

About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Roving Recreation Support Staff in the Parks & Recreation department. Applicants will be working directly with diverse populations ranging from young toddlers to older adults in mobile recreation programs as well as supporting special events sponsored by Asheville Parks and Recreation.
+ What you’ll be doing:
+ Driving Rec n’ Roll, our mobile program van, to various locations within the City of Asheville.
+ Assisting in setup, execution and breakdown of special events within the City of Asheville.
+ Loading/unloading needed supplies such as tents, tables, chairs, printed materials, games, promotional materials, etc. into Rec n’ Roll van and trailer.
+ Prepares, organizes, and facilitates daily and weekly activity schedules.
+ Will lead a variety of group games, crafts, and other various activities.
+ Will supervise and participate in all recreational activities with program participants.
+ Administer first aid as needed.
+ Responsible for behavior management of participants as needed. Includes recognizing and responding to issues in a timely manner.
+ Documenting issues and communicating necessary information to appropriate persons.
+ Maintains a positive attitude at all times and provides positive customer service to participants and the public.
+ Assists in maintaining cleanliness of the facility or program location after activities and event work days.
+ Organizes supplies and equipment at the main facility as needed.
+ Performs other related tasks as needed.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered :
+ Required and must be willing to take and be able to pass City provided Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certification class. Unless currently certified.
+ Ability to drive program vehicles. Must have a current NC or out-of-state driver's license and be 18 years or older.Staff assigned to mobile recreation programs must have a valid driver's license.
+ Ability to get to various program sites located throughout the City of Asheville for your workday. This program does not have a singular meeting spot.
+ Bi-lingual/multilingual speakers preferred.

Other things to know:
+ Work schedule consists of shifts. Examples of shifts include - Mobile Recreation from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM; evening shifts may be 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM; weekend shifts include half or full day. Occasional evening shifts 5pm-12am for Movies in the Park.
+ Variable Schedule opportunities available for programs and events that can be 10-20 hours a week year round with work hours not to exceed 40 hours per week in the busy summer months.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites
SKAs/Performance
+ General knowledge of community recreation work and practices.
+ Should include knowledge for use of equipment and leadership techniques.
+ Familiarity with relevant rules and regulations pertaining to social, artistic, and athletic programs for youth.
+ Ability to facilitate a variety of recreational activities.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants, and members of the general public.
+ Ability to enforce city, departmental, and program rules and regulations.
+ Ability to prepare and maintain program records.
+ Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
+ Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings.
+ Able to handle long periods of standing and physical activities.
+ Some shifts may require prolonged exposure to outdoor working environments.
+ Staff assigned to mobile recreation units must be able to operate a program vehicle; experience driving large vehicles is preferred.

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (5-75 pounds). Must be able to walk 3-5 miles on sometimes steep, slippery or uneven terrain

Sensory Requirements:
? Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings.
? Ability to drive program vehicles in day and night time conditions including inclement weather
? Ability to handle loud, unexpected noise from equipment or program participants
? Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors :
? Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
? Some shifts may require prolonged exposure to outdoor working environments.
