Job Description

The Nursing Supervisor facilitates communication among multiple departments, teams and groups to assure successful operations of the Hospital within the guidelines established by hospital administration.  The Nursing Supervisors help coordinate patient placement, facilitates in adequate staffing decisions and makes decisions on behalf of the administrator on call.  They also must have knowledge of regulatory requirements and utilizes the continuous improvement process and promotes creative problem-solving.

Responsibilities:

Assumes overall responsibility of coordinating administrative activities for the hospital on the evening, night, and weekend shifts with guidance from the Administrator on Call. Demonstrates understanding of the roles of all members of the health care team and identifies the competence level of shift personnel. Utilizes the steps of the Nursing Process to determine nursing needs of patients. Visits units to evaluate care and condition of patients, bed status, personnel assignments and problem solve as needed. Maintains communication with all patient care areas in order to identify, direct and evaluate patient needs and those of nursing staff.Uses effective communication skills and interpersonal skills when collecting data. Maintains confidentially of staff and patients. Serves in an advisory assisting role in regard to hospital functions, policies, procedures, and physicians. Responds and evaluates complaints and concerns and directs appropriate personnel.Supervises and/or coordinates all activities within the Department of Patient Care Services. Interprets hospital philosophy, objectives and policy changes for co-workers, patients, and visitors. Makes recommendations to the Unit Director regarding staffing patterns and/or requirements.Regulates staffing patterns on the units in cooperation with NASH. Makes recommendations to employees regarding performance and/or effectiveness in the patient care setting and communicates them to the Unit Director. Reviews, evaluates, and assists Directors with formal recommendations for promotion, demotion, transfer, commendation, and termination. Initiates corrective action as indicated. Makes recommendations to Directors and other supervisory personnel regarding patient care, equipment, policies, procedures and problem areas. Monitors employee health needs while on duty like employee accidents, employee exposures, and EAP with the guidance of the Employee health Nurse.Functions as a liaison between Department of Patient Care Services, other departments and outside agencies (i.e. news media, ambulance services, etc.. Responsible and accountable for obtaining emergency needs from departments closed during their tour of duty, i.e. Pharmacy, MedicalRecords, Central Services, central Stores and Dietary. Notifies "on call" personnel as needed. Participates and coordinates activities in all emergency calls as needed. Makes appropriate reports to hospital President and or his designee regarding disasters, fires, thefts, etc. Works closely with Admitting Department to assure utilization of beds. Initiates and conducts problem-solving meetings with individual, group, or patient care conferences as related to shift needs.Uses correct procedures and techniques when directing patient care. Uses appropriate reference material such as the Policy Manuals, Procedure Manuals, and Employee Handbook, etc. Initiates/assists in the guiding of, implementing of new policies and procedures, and establishing goals and objectives. Functions within the legal limitations as specified by Indiana Practice Act. Provides leadership as administrative representative to guide and direct hospital personnel through unusual and stressful situations that may arise on scheduled shift. Demonstrates a loyalty to the mission policies and Standards of Behavior of  La Porte Hospital. Communicates effectively. Promotes harmonious relationships between hospital personnel, physicians, and families.Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Attends mandatory one shot yearly or self study.Understands the importance of patient safety and safety of the environment and actively participates in safe practices. Identifies and reports potentially hazardous situations as outlined in hospital procedures. Takes immediate action when necessary to protect the health and wellbeing of patients, visitors and or    co workers. Works collaboratively to find ways of safeguarding patients.Expectations for assessment, treatment, and care of patients include specific training and competency for Neonate/Infant: 0-1 year old; Child/Pediatrics: 2-8 years old; Pre-Adolescent: 9-12 years old; Adolescents: 13-17 years old; Adult: 18-69 years old; and Late Adult: 70+ years old. (Administrative Policy ER-079, Position Description Format).Develop plans, goals and programs that are compatible with IU Health La Porte Hospital's mission statement. Demonstrates acceptance, an understanding of and support for the Customer Care standards. Develops annual capital and operational budgets for Peds/Med/Surg/ Ortho in conjunction with Clinical Manager. Develops strategies to monitor their implementation and compliance. Assists staff, utilizing a Shared Governance concept, with the development of a cohesive, service oriented team, serving as a role model, mentor and coach/facilitator.Accountable for staff recruitment, development and retention. Collaborates with Clinical Unit Manager/Charge Nurses to monitor staff competency and continuing education participation. Fosters open, collegial communication among individuals and departments. Actively supports and participates in the Quality Improvement program. Accountable for development of own management skills. Adheres to expectations of assigned committees. Maintains all necessary records to meet Joint Commission standards, federal, state and local law and codes,
