Newmont’s Merian operation in Suriname is an open pit gold mine approximately 66km south of the town Moengo and 30 km north of the Nassau Mountains near the French Guiana.  Newmont owns a 75 percent interest in the limited partnership and Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., Suriname’s state-owned oil company, owns the remaining 25 percent interest.

What will you be responsible for?

 

Oversee drilling and blasting activities to achieve production targets while ensuring safety and environmental compliance.

In this role, the individual will:

Lead daily drill and blast activities to ensure safe, efficient operations aligned with production targets and standard methodology.Formulate detailed drill and blast plans, including area preparation, hole design, blast patterns, and timing sequences, collaborating with engineering and production partners to optimize resource extraction.Implement health, safety, and environmental regulations within drill and blast operations, conducting regular safety audits and risk assessments to maintain a safe working environment.Continuously monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for drilling and blasting, analyzing data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.Compile and deliver detailed reports on drilling and blasting performance, including metrics on fragmentation, efficiency, and safety, to senior leadership.Guide, mentor, and refine the drill and blast team, providing training and professional growth opportunities to enhance their skills and performance.Execute regular performance evaluations, delivering feedback and establishing goals to ensure continuous improvement and impactful team morale.Identify relevant risks, implement mitigation measures, and continuously monitor for risks.Collaborate with contractors to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and contractual obligations, while maintaining alignment with organizational goals.

The above responsibilities are the main responsibilities of the position. The position also develops other activities that are not included in this document and the immediate supervisor is responsible for informing such activities.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

Note that the primary skills requested include drill and blast operations, safety management, and performance monitoring. Considering the supervisory aspect of the role, the accepted body of knowledge, such as formal education qualifications in Mining Engineering or a related field. Required knowledge that has been gained through work practice with drilling and blasting best practices. Essential soft skills for leadership and support functions should be included. 

Working Conditions and location

 

This position is located at Merian, the project site. Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment.
The Merian mine is located in Northeastern Suriname, approximately 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo and 60 kilometers south of Moengo.
Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace 
Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year.
The individual is required to work 6 weeks at the site, a 3-weeks off fly-in fly-out arrangement. The incumbent is expected to spend most of her/his time in the field.The position mayrequire travelingl to the Denver corporate office andassistingt otherAmericans sites.
