Summary

Reporting to the SPD Manager, this role is responsible for the coordination of all Sterile Processing Department (SPD) activities.  General responsibilities include training of staff related to instrumentation, care, handling, processing, and packaging, including decontamination and sterilization methods.  Assists with education of all Colleagues in Perioperative Services. Must maintain conceptual skills, and understand the clinical and technical aspects of SPD within the organization.   Responsible for the throughput and processes associated with maintaining an efficient SPD including care and handling of specialized supplies and equipment; monitors SPD Colleague performance in decontamination, assembly and sterilization duties; including preparation of packs, supplies, linens and instruments as directed. Assist the SPD Manager with the assigned task, which includes but not limited to, monthly reports, quality testing, and department audit. Must foster a collegial relationship and coordinate the departments’ efforts with OR leadership, Colleagues, vendors and other departmental service lines. Motivate and influence performance expectations and create a positive culture conducive to Colleague satisfaction while achieving the objectives of the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.  Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) and Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Certified Surgical Technician (CST) and one of the above mentioned sterile processing certifications required.  Additional Sterile processing certificates are encouraged.  Must be fluent in English, able to speak, read and write. Minimum Experience: Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) with 2 years of hands-on experience in a Central Sterile Department or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with certification in Sterile Processing 1 year.  Expert in sterile processing, equipment, instrumentation and implant sets. Certifications Required: Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) and Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) obtained within 3 months of hire.
