Supervisor, Tooling Engineer

Tooling Engineer Supervisor


 

The Tooling Engineer Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing the tooling and CNC machining processes, ensuring that production requirements are met with the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This position will lead a team of tooling engineers, technicians, and machine operators, while also collaborating with other departments to streamline operations and improve processes. 

 

Performance Expectations

 

Supervise and mentor a team of tooling engineers and technicians to ensure effective performance and growth.  Coordinate daily operations, providing guidance on CNC machine tool setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.  Ensure the adherence to safety standards and company policies in tooling and machining operations.  Foster a collaborative team environment, ensuring that the team’s objectives align with company goals.  Oversee the design, development, and optimization of tooling solutions for CNC machining operations.  Ensure the timely and efficient creation of tool designs and fixtures that meet production specifications.  Collaborate with design and production teams to identify tooling needs and improve existing tooling.  Continuously evaluate tooling efficiency, performance, and quality to recommend improvements.  Utilize deep knowledge of CNC machining processes to troubleshoot and solve problems related to tooling, machine setups, and part quality.  Work closely with CNC machinists and operators to ensure proper tool selection, setup, and execution of machining processes.  Monitor production progress and resolve any issues related to tooling or machining performance.  Ensure proper documentation of tooling specifications, maintenance schedules, and operational guidelines.  Drive continuous improvement initiatives in tooling design and CNC machining methods.  Lead efforts to reduce cycle times, minimize scrap, and improve product quality by implementing new tooling strategies.  Evaluate and recommend new technologies, machinery, and tooling materials to enhance machining capabilities.  Manage tooling projects from conception through execution, ensuring alignment with production schedules.  Coordinate tooling trials and tests, ensuring timely and cost-effective completion.  Develop and maintain detailed project reports, timelines, and budgets for tooling-related projects.  Ensure tooling and CNC machining processes comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.  Work with the Quality Assurance team to resolve any quality-related issues and implement corrective actions.  Act as a liaison between engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure seamless communication and project execution.  Provide technical support to production teams in the troubleshooting of complex tooling and machining issues.  Prepare and present regular reports on tooling performance, cost savings, and project updates to management. 

 

 

Credentials

 

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.  Minimum of 5 years of experience in tooling engineering and CNC machining, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role. 

 

 

Desired Characteristics

 

In-depth knowledge of CNC machining processes, including turning, milling, and grinding.  Strong background in designing, testing, and maintaining tooling for CNC operations.  Proficiency with CAD/CAM software for tooling design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam, etc.).  Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in machining and tooling applications.  Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.  Strong understanding of safety protocols in manufacturing environments.  Experience in high-precision machining or aerospace/automotive manufacturing industries preferred.  Certification or training in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies preferred.   Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or other quality management systems preferred.  Experience with ERP/MRP systems for production planning and scheduling preferred.
