Position Summary: 

The Supervisor, Patient Services is responsible for coordination and supervision of the Outpatient Registration, Emergency Department Registration, and scheduling/registration staff across multiple areas at Tidelands Health.  This position requires a detailed knowledge base in registration, emergency department and scheduling protocols and billing practices, as well as an understanding of how these areas impact the flow of work throughout the departments and organization. The Supervisor is responsible for developing and enforcing policies and procedures, monitoring the accuracy of registration and scheduling data entered by associates, ensuring that proper patient experience protocols are followed and clearing issues in various registration and billing work queues, and managing the overall training and coordination of work for the department.

Included in the supervision of these areas is preparation of staffing schedules and recommendation and coordination of process-related improvements and changes. The individual will have knowledge in the hospital purchasing process and cost containment methods of the Patient Access Department. In addition, this position is also responsible for providing information for and assisting with budget preparation.

The position requires the ability to independently plan, schedule, organize and respond appropriately on a wide variety of subjects and situations. The ability to perform the duties of the staff supervised is required. As hospital reimbursement, patient experience, and provider schedules are dependent upon the activities of the Patient Access Department, timely completion of duties and follow-up is critical. Involvement in departmental and interdepartmental process improvement teams would also be expected of the individual.

A substantial portion of the normal duties requires proper judgment, sensitivity, and strict adherence to Tidelands Health’s policy on confidentiality. The individual has access to patients’ medical information, as well as financial information. The individual maintains and has access to confidential departmental personnel files. May be required to perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:   

• Previous experience in a healthcare related setting with knowledge in insurance payer regulations of primary/secondary coverage, required.

• Understanding of Patient Access procedures and policies, required.

• Hospital Business Office or Scheduling experience, preferred.

Education:

Must meet one of the following:

  o High School Diploma with a minimum of five (5) years healthcare patient access experience OR;

  o Associates Degree in Business-related field and a minimum of three (3) years’ healthcare patient access experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Demonstrated knowledge of registration/scheduling functions and responsibilities.

• Ability to work independently and to train and direct others.

• Able to perform basic mathematical calculations, and balance and reconcile figures accurately.

• Able to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

• Must be customer-orientated, establishing and maintaining long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by constantly meeting and exceeding expectations.

• Able to work effectively with internal and external customers, to include patients, visitors, vendors, providers, employees, etc.

• Ability to transport patients, required.

• Working knowledge of fax machine, calculator, typewriter, copier, computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office operating systems, required.

• Medical terminology knowledge, preferred.

• Typing speed of 45wpm
