About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. About this Role

Reporting to the Superintendent - Mechanical this role will oversee the efficient operation of the Lihir Gold Mine scaffolding yard. 

You will ensure the scaffolding equipment is properly maintained and stored safely, material requests are managed as per the maintenance schedule, and the delivery and collection of the scaffolding materials is managed effectively.

This role will be working a 22:20 roster. You will be working day shifts and shift work during the shutdown peak periods. This role is offered on a 2-year Fixed Term-Full time basis.

As an expatriate, you will play a critical role in the ongoing development of the team, in support of Newmont’s commitment to developing our national and local workforce.  
 

Your role will consist of:

•    Coordinate the safe delivery and collection of scaffolding equipment to site
•    Supervise a team of Scaffolders including training, coaching and development 
•    Ensure material requests are managed and prioritised as per the maintenance schedule
•    Keep track of material inventory, ensuring stock levels are adequate and ordering replacements
•    Ensure all scaffolding materials are inspected and fit for purpose before distributing
•    Develop an effective service, maintenance, and repair process for recyclable scaffolding materials
•    Manage the stock rotation via the scaffolding management system
•    Complete administrative tasks and develop dashboards for distributing
•    Ensure daily pre starts for vehicles and machines are conducted
•    Ensure vehicles and machines are kept clean and in good working order
•    Ensure the regular maintenance and service of vehicles and machines is maintained
•    Streamline process and implement efficient workflows 
•    Drive and influence proactive safety behaviours

 

Your training, skills and experience checklist

Here is what we would need so see from you!

•    Extensive experience working as a Scaffolding Supervisor and working in a scaffolding yard managing 500t of stock
•    Experience in metals extraction and processing roles of large-scale processing plants is essential
•    Proven experience in operations, Supervisor roles including leadership and strong people management skills
•    Advanced Scaffolding Licence (High Risk Licence)
•    Ability to interpret Engineering drawings, OEM manuals, and standards
•    Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
•    Previous Expatriate experience working in a remote location
•    Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously
•    Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines
•    Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building and training
•    Be able to work a FIFO roster in PNG
•    Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment 
•    Must be able to complete a National Police Check & Navex Risk Rate Screening
•    Ability to satisfy all requirements for PNG Work Permit and Visa 
 

Working conditions and location

This role is offered on a 22:20 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from Australia to Lihir Island. 

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts. 

We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
